Thanks for the intro Russel. Lots of info here in the old threads. Excuse my ignorance but can you explain what EHS management is?

    BRASSCATCHER,

Thank you for the question. EHS is short for environmental, health and safety. Many companies develop EHS management systems to develop policies, procedures and inspections to mitigate risks to employee safety and environmental impacts. A lot of times the system will be certified to ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, RIOS or R2. Please feel free to review the seedtosequoia website (including blog posts) for more information and let me know if you have any more questions.

    Regards,

    Russell

Welcome from "mile-high" snowy central NY - I kind of figured that's what EHS stood for.

Thank you for the welcome. I won't mention the temperature today in Austin, TX to avoid you mentally throwing a snowball at me.

Welcome to the forum, look forward to tonight, when I will check out your blog & Web pages. My question to you is there a particular aspect of the scrap side of this business that relates to your interest, just curious? I think I could see why a EHS consulting company would want to be involved with us here at SMF, but I would like to hear your personal reasons if you don't mind.

Great question. My last eight years have been in the recycling industry (e-waste), first as an operations manager and then as an EHS Manager. Over that time I have seen the industry transform, in many cases at the behest of risk/environmentally conscious customers, to develop environmental, health and safety management systems and then have them certified to ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, RIOS and R2. There were a lot of bumps in the road learning and implementing an EHSMS and I believe that is the value that I can bring to this forum. I am happy to offer advice like how to plan the management system so that it provides a return on your investment. Of course all in the hope of finding a recycler that would like to utilize my services in developing, auditing or improving their EHS. Let me know if I did not answer your question and I look forward to your feedback.

Do all users have issues typing quickly on this website? Any tricks?

Thanks for the reply to my question and yes that's what I wanted to know. I think you will add to this forum just fine as a needed asset. I to have problems with the typing, but it's mostly due to my large hands and thumbs that get in the way! Wireless device and dead zones don't help either and if needed the edit features always works for me, even hours latter.

I can't answer to the "all" but for me having an old brain and old hands seems likely the most direct cause typing and other activities.

Welcome to the forum and its great to have a different perspective to this industry. We have a couple of R2 certified buyers that are members to the forum. Take a look at the buyers/sellers forum.

Personally I am a very small operation and I do pay attention to safety factors for myself and those around me but I will not be needing a consultant. Perhaps you could share some of your experiences and point out what/when one of our members might want to look for additional advise from yours or a similar company. Mike

Thanks all for the feedback on typing and that definitely happens with me; however, the problem is that my computer is pausing between key strokes or appears to not be recognizing my key strokes. Tried a different keyboard but that did not work. Super!

As for the size of the operation, I have helped a company with five employees build an EHSMS that was certified to R2. I have low overhead and I am flexible to the customer’s needs.

miked, sorry that I missed your question. I just responded to junkfreak on almost the same question.
There is a good amount of free information out there. Unfortunately, in many cases, including OSHA and EPA regulations there are a lot more questions that you have after you read the legalese then when you first started. Which is good because that is the learning process. Many people find it easier to turn to someone who has expertise with understanding EHS requirements and has experience implementing them in different settings. A knowledgeable EHS consultant will have absorbed the best practices of other companies and industries that he/she can then implement at your facility. You may have an idea on how to implement a system or control, but a second pair of eyes will likely mean even more ideas and solutions to ensure you have a safe work place for yourself and the environment. I liken it to having the blueprints to build something complex. In some cases someone will be fine building it for the first time, but in other cases it will be a lot less frustrating if you have an expert help you. I hope that I have left you with some justification for my occupation. 
Let me know if I met the intention of your question.
