Hello everyone
I am a new to the scrapping world and only recently started to do this to earn some money because I'm unemployed. So far I have gathered things around my house, 3 computers, a couple DVD players, some non-working cell phones, a small section of copper plumbing from my basement, a freezer and possibly a riding lawn mower. I have found lots of helpful information and guidance on SMF and working my way through old threads. I am pretty handy, but I have limited tools (which includes a drill, digital multimeter, pipe cutter, electric soldering iron, and butane micro torch/soldering iron, and assorted hand tools like screw drivers, pliers, wire cutters, tin snips, hammer and crowbar. No cash to invest in new toys, ER tools that is (feeding myself and furry children is top priority for now)
I live in Northern Delaware, New Castle County, and there are only a couple scrap yards near me. It looks like going over the Pennsylvania line to sell any scrap is a pain, some places say they only work with PA residents. I took the copper pipes and copper from the CRTs to a place in Maryland which was clean, not too busy, friendly staff; however they don't buy electronics scrap. And I don't want to go to New Jersey because it costs $4 minimum in tolls just to come home.
So far I have broken down the CRTs and pulled some of the miscellaneous components from the boards, opened the computers and some of the disk drives and hard drives but only really tore down the power supplies. The computers are pretty old like 92,93 and 2001 so I assumed nothing worked or would have been compatible, but I'm finding out that may not be the case so I'm not going to break them down anymore yet. I don't way to test them other than a multimeter, and then I'm not entirely sure which things to test for what. So I will keep on reading and then post questions if need be since this is such a great forum.
