    Hey Ya'll

    Howdy,

I'm a scrapper of just about anything and everything in NW Florida. I work full time running an IT Company (specializing in custom software design and custom website design), and also managing construction jobs from time to time. I've been scrapping with my Dad since I was 14-15 (God I've been doing it a decade now?). I started separating myself from him after the first few years, we still run loads together, but lately he's been hurting so bad, I pickup and haul the loads home, unload them, then let him organize and clean any items that need cleaning before temporarily storing it till I have enough to make the 90 mile round trip shot to the yard worth it. Somehow we make some extra money even with both of us focusing on different areas of it. His calling seemed to be with Catalytic Converters and Lead-Acid batteries. I prefer to deal with heavy solid steel or E-Waste. I'm currently in the process of tearing down 50 computers I got, and building an aluminum smelter to condense down a lot of my aluminum.

Anyways that's a bit about me, if ya'll want to know anything, feel free to ask. I don't bite (hard)

Welcome to SMF from the Dakota's. That sounds like a great operation you have set up and the time you get to spend with your dad is even better. Good luck to you.

Might be nice to see the homemade aluminum smelter when you get it finished. Lots of photo junkies around here.
Welcome to the forum from Southern Montana.

Welcome from Atlanta. My dad works with me and its a great benefit to have a good father-son relationship. Enjoy the time you spend together and continue the tradition if you ever have kids (my 2cents). I leave for Florida tomorrow on a business/vacation trip...can you please tell the Governor that I prefer mid-80's temps with a slight gulf breeze and low humidity? Enjoy the forum!

Going to start with a small one I found plans for (uses charcoal), until I can get enough extra cash to built me a larger one. My yards are picky on the AL having to be clean (had them try to cut my price on some old bent aluminum shelves for one small bolt I missed. I pulled it as soon as they mentioned it. Hopefully the smelter will allow me to smelt down the aluminum parts of the HDD's and heat sinks to get full price for them. I love the yard I deal with, but that one bolt incident taught me to triple check all my "clean" materials again as I'm loading them. Also smelting will allow me to carry more in the small truck I have at the moment. I really need a larger truck, but bills come first.

The plans didn't look too safe considering it'll be dealing with melted aluminum, but I have the materials on hand for it, and a few ideas to make it safer. As soon as I get it built, I'll be posting pictures. I might wind up seeing how much smelting I can get away with making one out of Sackcrete. I have a spare bag, but I've heard it cracks after just a few smelts. Oh well, live and learn, and of course, safety first. Gotta clean an area for the smelter away from the wood house.

Patriot, yea working with dad is a blessing, and occasionally a curse. I love him dearly, but we don't see eye to eye on a whole lot. It makes for some good days and some bad days, but if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be scrapping nor doing construction work. I owe him a lot for teaching me what he has. Sadly since we still operate out of the house with just a small truck our loads are relatively small, but I'm working on changing that. I need to get a new axle for a trailer I got free, and something to make a deck out of, then I will at least have a trailer I can haul with. Also would be nice if Florida made it easier to open an actual yard, the amount of paperwork your required to keep is ridiculous.

Shendog, hopefully the kids will wait a while, I'm still young and getting my life on track. I do plan on continuing the tradition with them when I have them. I truly enjoy our good days between us, but he has some mental health issues that make it hard to deal with him at times. I make the best of it though. I wish it would cool down here, it's too hot in these parts. Then it rains daily, but just enough to bump the humidity to 80-90%, and all the clouds disappear. I hope your working vacation goes well, be sure to where plenty of sun-block, you wouldn't want to go back as red as a lobster. Are you going to south Florida, or the panhandle area?

You might want to check with your yard to see if they take aluminum ingots. Mine doesen't

Thanks for that scrapping4ever, checking that didn't occur to me at all. I'll have to call them and find out. If nothing else, still going to smelt some down to do some sand casting.

Going to Tampa to attend wedding of another SMF member and do some business as well, but taking the wife/kids to spend some beach time together. When I was in my early 20's I packed up from RI and headed to Orlando, then Ft. Lauderdale where i met my wife. Onwards to Tampa where my oldest was born, then to Atlanta for last 15 years. I love going to Florida, but mostly in October-April.

edit: let us know how you do on the smelter. Of course you can always use ant colonies as a mold for your aluminum:

I've considered the ant colonies only due to the fact I have way too many around the house, and they make awesome sculptures. Tampa is nice, but I sadly never get down that way, even having family down there. October-April is the best time in Florida, at least then it's bearable. Heat index here is over 100, close to 105 I think, and has been that way for days already. I'll definitely keep ya'll posted on the smelter. Might work on that tonight when I get back to the house.
