My name is Steve. I own an electronics repair business.

My business mainly repairs current gen game consoles (PS4, Xbox One, etc.) but we are branching out into Apple products as well. I joined this forum to learn more about the electronics recycling and scrap business as I will probably be dealing with recyclers as I look to buy salvage items. This looks like a great forum and resource for me and I look forward to hanging out with you all!

Welcome to the forum Steve, as Jimicrk suggested the old threads are like a scrappers "gold mine". Use the search feature for topics that peak your interest, also when you find a thread. that touches on those peaked interest, remember to look at the bottom every thread for the heading, "similar threads". A lot of good info and members helping each other with the entire spectrum of all things we call scrap.

Hello Steve and welcome to the worlds most popular scrap forum.

Just curious what your take on tin whiskers is, just how much of our modern electronics succumb to this new lead free solder. It's a well known fact there are many dead satellites worth millions orbiting the earth that have failed due to whisker growth.

My beloved Garmen GPS end of life right at 5 years, I suspect tin whiskers were the culprit.

I'm curious if disassembly with careful brushing to avoid static build up on the circuits and motherboard would save an expensive piece of electronics from being scraped.

Hmmm...I actually don't have much experience with tin whiskers...I don't come across them in my business and haven't ever noticed them causing any problems. I've heard a little bit about them, but just haven't seen them as an issue in my specific niche. Sorry I can't help!
