    Hi,

Been lurking for a while, figured it is time I spoke up and contributed too.

Only been scrapping for a year or so, strictly as a side line. I work in a fairly large manufacturing facility and we were paying to have our scrap metal hauled away. We had a large machinery reconfiguration last year which generated a pretty good pile of metal. The people taking our scrap wanted us to either cut it into smaller pieces or pay them extra, in addition to their normal fee, before they would haul it...

I offered haul it away for free. Bought a crappy pickup truck for $1500, cut up the metal and scrapped it. Ended up being 11 tons of #1 and about 2 tons of light iron. Paid for the truck, the gas, insurance for the year with some left over. That was unusual circumstance, but I still get about 2000 - 3000 lbs. a month of steel just for being here. The company is happy to not be paying to have it removed and I get some pocket money. Scrap prices are way down now but as long as I cover my gas it's all free money.

Recently the IT department here has been upgrading equipment and getting rid of older stuff. IT head asked me if I wanted any of the old systems. Sure, why not? Gave me 60 assorted Dell, HP and Compac desktop systems, (pretty heavily stripped but hey, they were free.)

Trying to find more information about extracting value from the e-scrap is what lead me to this site. It has been a very useful tool for me already and I wanted to express my thanks for the knowledge that has been shared.

    Thanks!

We purchase laptop computers and many components for greater than scrap value. We offer a shipping reimbursement program.replies

    Greetings from Wyoming.

Always look for more than scrap value items. RAM, HDDs, some CPUs, ....

Instead of selling RAM for $13 per pound, some sticks may be worth half that each. You never know.... Scrap value should always be the lowest price you get for something.
