    intro with a ?

Hey all. Im not into scrapping full time, but have been doing it on the side for years. Im surprised more people dont. I see it kind of like free money laying around all over the place. All you gotta do is pick it up. Any how, Right now I have a darn good pile stacked up in the back yard and its a mix of everything, including appliances, stainless, aluminum, copper, cast, ect ect. After I sort out the more valuable metals, and batteries, motors, ect.. what i have left is just stuff like old bed frames, metal shelving, metal chairs, rims, ect ect.. the stuff you see a mountain of when you pull into the scrap yard.
Is this what the call shred? Do some places call it melt? Just something I been wondering. Thanks.

I believe the answer is yes. It isn't worth much, so don't buy a truck on the hopes of making back the money to pay for it with that pile of bed frames and metal shelving and chairs. You will be pressed to afford a six pack.

I've never heard it called melt, but it's definitely shred. T00nces is right- it doesn't add up to much. Last year, I hauled this load in:

It paid around $50, before the prices collapsed. To me, shred is the byproduct of the money that you make scrapping.

Get yourself a nice magnet. And be sure to check the stainless and rims with the magnet.

Yep, I agree it doesnt bring alot. I pick it up anywhere I see it or from friends (they all know to save it for me), where I work, ect. and throw it in the back yard. Theres a good yard not ten minutes away, so every five or six months I haul it over there. Its a hundred bucks or two most the time. Free money to me, so its worth it. Thanks guys.

    I wish....

That truck has a 305. It's a 1987, so it's TBI, not carbureted. It has the automatic 4-speed, and is two wheel drive.

That was the truck that I was brought home from the hospital in when I was born. My father parked it next to a field where it sat abandoned for nine years. I brought it back to life three years ago. It's rough around the edges, but I'm very happy with it. There's nothing like something you put together yourself.

Out of the four trucks we have now, it's my favorite.

Oh, I have a 1986 Firebird Trans am that had the 305 in it. It was the car my Father drove when he was 17. It was parked due to electrical problems, so, I took it out and restored it. It's my favorite car as well but the only place I drive it is church, the parade, and the occasional car show. I really like the paint color on your truck.

Thanks! I did the paint work myself. It's definitely a 10 foot job- there are runs, spots, and other imperfections. I used Oliver tractor green on the main body, and creme for the two-tone roof.

A 305 in a Pontiac wouldn't be too bad. I'd much rather have the 350- in a headwind or loaded, it could use more power. But, the 2.76 rear end and no air conditioning means that I can get 22MPG on the highway. Not too bad for a V8 pickup....

I've never been too much of a Pontiac fan (Mostly the later plasticky models), but I've always liked the Camaro/Trans Am. A reliable drivetrain in a lighter-weight body. Sounds like a winning combination!

Heck, that's better than my '05 F-150. I did a '66 custom in Orange tractor enamel with a cream roof in my teens. My body work and painting skills were limited back then and it was definitely a 15 footer.

Back to the thread, shred isn't exactly our bread and better, but, it's better than nothing so long as you wisely take into account your expenditures. Like matador said, it's a byproduct of our income source at the moment. I would recommend doing clean out jobs if you can get them. I had a whole business doing that when I was in college and it paid enough for me to live well. Of course it was a college town so dumpster diving after the semester was over was a no brainer, and landlords were itching to get peoples stuff out of the apartment in preparation for the next semester.

I find I get off topic a lot. Anywho, welcome to the forum! May your stay be long and educational!
