21 years old and looking to start something new

    Hey all,
Just came in to say hi and a quick run down me. My name is Ryan Tombs and I am from NJ. Just turned 21 and graduated Oklahoma state university with honors in august with an associates in diesel mechanics and HVAC. I was fortunate to go into OSU with a contracted job during school and upon graduation. Over the last two years I spent my time in 13 different states working on industrial generators, air compressors, and HVAC equipment. Anyways, I actually hate what I do. I grew up in a small business household where my dad is a funeral director (currently him and the owner, where it is more like a partnership). I hate working for an international company. I grew up doing scrap metal and cutting grass (used to maintain the little league field that I played on). My dad has always talked about owning a scrap business. So I started doing research and with me going back to school for a business degree. I am seriously looking into the whole scrap yard. I have a little more detail in the thread I created in another section (new here with new business venture in general lets talk business section). Please feel free to comment as I am putting together a loose business plan/ personal plan to talk to the family/ funeral business accountant in the coming weeks. Nice to be here and cant wait to learn!
    -Ryan

Definitely not a good time to do anything like that right now with prices so low and yards actually laying off employees and cutting hours.
Even the bigger scrap companies are closing some of their extra yards. From what I've heard there is quite a few closed out east. Might want to hang onto your job till our prices are on the rebound.

We purchase laptop computers and many components for greater than scrap value. We offer a shipping reimbursement program.replies

Greetings from Wyoming! I'll read the other thread, but without having done that, let me just say that I agree with Mechanic- the times aren't very good for yards now. We're down to only one yard, and they're not doing well....

thanks all! The local yard said they are stock piling copper and aluminum but they ship steel and such everyday, I know the prices are in the hole. I am assuming like any part of the economy that it will come back up. My plan is not a 2 week plan this will be months (on the side of purchasing a yard). As for work, thanks for the heads up on CLOSINGS, I knew it was rough but closing? Jezz? How long has the price been awful low?

Do it. If you can make it work now, you will do fantastic when stuff recovers.
