Howdy! New here on the forums, and wanted to let people know who we are. Cabot Recycling Station is an ongoing nonprofit recycling program governed by the board of directors of the Calhoun County Solid Waste Authority, here in Grantsville, WV. We are "centrally located right in the middle of nowhere" according to Tom, the executive director. He's right. It's far to anywhere from here, which is the largest hindrance to better markets for us. We strive to keep all we can diverted from the landfill, and buy all (common) nonferrous metals, which we ship out ourselves in the Cabot box truck. We collect and bale cardboard, paper, and #1 and #2 container and bottle plastics. We also accept green, brown, and clear bottle glass, printer cartridges, household batteries, rechargeable tool battery packs, all electronics, (we are currently looking for someone interested in our electronics) steel/tin cans, aluminum foil/food cans, and take unwanted but functioning items for donation and display them on our "giveaway table", for the public to take. Sometimes they throw us a few bucks. Our drop-off or "public room", is a separate room of the facility, and is open to the public for recycling 24/7. No single stream recycling here- everyone sorts their own stuff. In our very rural area, many don't recycle, and we try to educate the public about it through booths at local festivals, and by having kids here for field trips. We operate on state grant funds secured by Tom, who gets them from the WVDEP REAP program, and the SWMB. We are always looking for profitable markets, as most of what we are collecting costs us more time and money than it's worth, and we need to offset costs of our recycling those types of things.
I'm Craig- probably the only one anyone will be chatting with. I have ideas about building wire stripping, glass crushing, and other machines, (cheaply!) since our budget is about nothing, and would like to explore ideas with others, in time.
Reduce, reuse, recycle!
