    Hello! IT nerd turned Scrapper

    Hi all!

I have been lurking for a few months as I needed something to do this summer while I take Calc 2 for my EE degree. I have a degree in IT and have worked in the field for a few years. So this summer I decided to fix up some older computers and place them on ebay! I got my first one completed and listed on ebay *WOOT* (cant post links ) but no sells yet so hopefully I did not waste a bunch of time and money on buying these old machines.

Now not everything can be fixed or is worth fixing. I got a bunch of blade servers for a buck a piece at auction but they seem to be worth more in scrapping from what I have read and studied up so thats what we will be doing. these are multi slot hi-grade boards form what I can tell so 120lbs at $3.75 seems like a good deal to me. The only thing im not sure of is what I should do with the steel cases...

Either way ill be here a lot this summer try to figure out the game plan to escrap and refurbishing!

Thanks for everyones thoughts and comments on this forum!

    -Ray

    Welcome to the forum.
Hopefully being in the IT field will allow access to old pc's and other data equipment.
I've been in the telecom business since 84 and being able to walk into a business to repair or install new equipment is great. It gives you an advantage most people don't have.
The job comes first but while you're on site your contact is usually the same person you need to talk to about removing any old or broken pc's or phone systems.
I sell my pc cases to a scrap yard locally for $100 a ton. Last week I took 1300 pounds of pc, data switch, router and server cases to the scrap yard.

    Hey Jim!

Seems like a lot work to haul 1300lbs for $60 bucks! I love telecom! I have a CCNP cert before heading back to school for a change. It looks like telecom boards pay the most as well. Does that include cisco swtich board or just cellphone stuff?

Ill get some pictures of my first major auction hall on monday.

I have a thread where I post a lot of pics of things I find and scrap or resell. I will try to include a link to it.

Yes 1300 lbs is a lot for me but that's small potatoes to a lot of scrappers here. That was from about 2 weeks of taking stuff apart and my wife did most it.

When the garage starts getting full the metal has to go. It might not bring a lot of money but it's a little. The circuit boards are where the money is at.

I just wish I had a place to recycle my plastic.

Welcome to the forum. Do read the thread Jim has.

You will likely find that steel is a by product of ewaste scrapping. Lately with the price being so low I have paid my son to take it to the yard. Much smaller amounts than Jim does but I need to get it out of my back yard before it gets very big. Good luck and 73, Mike

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked
