New to forums, Not to scrapping.

Hi Y'all, I'm new to the world of forums. I've been scrapping since i could drive (2010), so I'm not new to the scrap game,(even worked at the yard in 2011-2012), but by far not the most Experienced. Ive dropped off over 90 (almost 100 now) tons of metal to 13 different yards in 3 different states in my time. (half of that was spent in the army in places where i couldn't scrap much.) I'm on here pretty much trying to learn how to be more efficient in the way I scrap. (I have my methods that work, some that sometimes work, and those that fail completely, and those that used to work but don't any more, some methods that no one else I know of would even think of.) As the scrap game changes rapidly in my area I try to stay on the winning side but sometimes I'm a bit behind the curve. As I'm preparing to possibly have to do this full time again due to my inability to hold a job after I got out of the Army I'll be searching on here and asking questions to help prepare/evolve myself into the most efficient scrapper I can be. Hopefully this forum helps, as I need to learn about E-scrap and some other little tidbits at least.

Welcome to SMF from the Buffalo Commons. First and foremost, thank you for your service for our country. You will find a great deal of information in the old threads and from a large number of knowledgeable members. It is hard to make a living as a full time scrapper especially with the current prices. It is possible as several members of this community are full time, but some exist on rice and beans or beans and rice. Good luck,
Give back more to this world than we take.

Well welcome to the forum and thank you for your service. Follow Patriot's advice and read all the old treads, there is a wealth of information on here. Also become a paid member to help you further, best money I spent. But above all, read as many old post you can swallow, there is a ton of info for the taking. Welcome once again. And if it isn't beans and rice then its Ramon noodles and mac'n'cheese with the occasional hotdog meal. Happy scrapping

Hey I do realize that its hard to make it with todays prices, Ive already had to rely on my metal finding abilitys to get by once before. Only that was by choice. This time not so much. Unless one of the local yards hires me im pretty much gonna be forced into it. I tried a few jobs in 2016 but none really worked out. Some I even lost money by choosing to work. I kinda want to go over the road again but the last company I worked for left me at their terminal out side LA. I got lucky that time and had a mile or so ruck to the airport but I can't risk being stranded somewhere else like that. But I have noticed that since prices are down no one else around me really scraps much any more. So what I lack in $ i make up for in volume. Plus I found a yard that shreds the steel on their land so even now steel pays $5/100. Everywhere else is like $2-$3.5/100 right now. Its not like it was but still better than micky D's.

One question I do have that I'm not really sure will be in the forums is, Since scrapping is "recycling" pretty much and my business is pretty much just scrapping right now, since I already have a tax ID and have saved every scrap reciept since 2010 if I start saving my 2017 fuel reciepts would there be any benifit to Filing taxes for the scrapping I do or would the Government just rob me blind? I'm only really asking cause if I have another year like 2011 I think I can make more scrapping in 2017 than i made at real jobs in 2016
