started scrapping late last year and I'm noticing that my yards pay about $1 less per LB than the going rate in the commodities market on copper. Would it be a good idea to just melt the copper and resell the finish product online yourself?

Welcome to the forum. First look for another scrap yard and compare prices. You say they are about $1 cheaper than other yards why stay with them.
My opinion on melting copper is don't. Use the time and effort finding more scrap. 73, Mike
