    100 year old lead

Hi I'm new to this site, hope everyone is doing well. my name is Diana and I am trying to find out information about selling lead. I live in CA. I have found some lead that has either been buiried for over 100 years, some submerged in bay water for the same amount of time., there is gelena involved and who knows what. I believe the lead is from the bottom of smelting pots from long ago. Used to help shore of railroad tracks many years ago near a port. Anyway I have already gathered quite a bit. after reading about it I feel i should wait on smelting it for now, it is in a raw form. I'll add some photos later, its really neat looking stuff. I love to recycle, in fact in my younger days when recycling paid better i was SICK with it. now it is more of a hobby/passion. Silly I realize but it is what it is. Anyway after all that I need to find the best place to sell this stuff. thanks Diana

Wish I could help with some advice, but I have no idea. I can tell you that in order to post pics here, you need to have 10 posts first.
Welcome to SMF. You could try the search feature to find your answers. I have only acquired some small lead, not old, and I plan to sell it on ebay to an enthusiast.

Easy way to start is take a representative sample to local scrap yards and see what they say. I would not smelt anything unless I had to. Why? time, expense and potential dangers(spill some molten lead on something you are attached to and see if you agree).

Still you have a possible great find just need to sell it. 73, Mike

Sounds interesting!! Might go for more per pound with collectors if you can shore up a good story about the stuff.

I don't believe the "you have to have 10 posts to post photos" statement, I've seen his twice tonight. I'm pretty sure I posted pixs with my first question post, which would have been like my 2nd or 3rd post after an introduction. I think its 10 posts to be able to pm someone. If you have a photobucket account, trying posting photos from there.

I have shared this before. There is a site that is dedicated to casting bullets for firearms. They buy and sell lead all the time. A little internet forum cross pollination never hurts.

forreals your lead is much older than 100 years, lead is formed when uranium decays.

Lead-206, the last element on the list, is not radioactive. It does not decay, and therefore has no half-life
