In some cases ... the FAA needs all of the pieces of the aircraft so that they can fit it all together like a jigsaw puzzle in a hangar somewhere. That way they can reconstruct what happened to cause the crash.
There's probably a protocol for what happens to the pieces after they're done with the material.
It's all rather grim. There's every chance that somebody died in the wreck. You just never know these days. Making art from the wreckage might be considered offensive to the lost one's surviving relatives ?????
