Aviation scrap (not for reuse)

Hello,

I am an artist on the East coast who works with making casts of crushed metal to be reproduced in plastic.

I understand that it is very hard to get aviation scrap from a fire or accident; I understand the liability concerns for those who take these materials.

However, if I am just trying to use a crushed airplane to take casts from, or even just borrow it for this purpose, would that be at all possible?

Very curious anyone's thoughts. I in no way want to get anyone in this profession in trouble.

Hi and welcome to the forum. All you need is damaged plane body material? Am I understanding this right?

In some cases ... the FAA needs all of the pieces of the aircraft so that they can fit it all together like a jigsaw puzzle in a hangar somewhere. That way they can reconstruct what happened to cause the crash.

There's probably a protocol for what happens to the pieces after they're done with the material.

It's all rather grim. There's every chance that somebody died in the wreck. You just never know these days. Making art from the wreckage might be considered offensive to the lost one's surviving relatives ?????

Hello and thank you all for the comments. My intention is not to benefit for death or serious injury. However, if someone has a plane that flipped, or burned on a runway and they no longer need it, I think making it art before it's scrapped is fair game? Insurance companies are reluctant to let them go.

If all you need is damaged plane parts then get in contact with an aircraft maintanence facility. They are very likely to gave what you're looking for, especially those that do structural repair

Just speculation:

It's understandable. Most of the insurance types are straight line concrete thinkers. It's all about the numbers and business with them. Many don't have a creative bone in their body.

Artists ... well they're the creative type though they do seem to develop a set way of making art as they mature.

Maybe if you offered the bean counters more money than they could recover from scrap ?

In all honesty ... i don't know how much help we can offer.

My guess would be that most of us have never even seen a crashed plane up close ... let alone scrapped one out.

Car wreck art might be easier to do ? Gawd, the local scrap yards must be loaded with cars that have been a wreck.

I think it wa in his 2nd crash where the plane skidded on wet grass, failed to gain air, clipped a #8 wire farm fence & landed prop first on the farmers prize bull. Yep it made a mess.

Peeved off farmer? Sure was "Look you could of hit any other bovine in that paddock & i couldnt have cared less, but you hit my one prized bull out of a paddock full of bovines...That, im not happy about ".
