    Hello from Appleton, WI

Hello everyone! My name is Ben. As of right now I'm just a hobbyist scrapper. My main job is a 3D graphic artist and Media Producer.
Ever since I was little (maybe 3 or 4 years old) I have been picking things out of the trash - much to my parents chagrin. They would constantly tell me to stop it but I guess now that I'm 33 I just won't stop I have a wife and 2 kids so just being a hobbyist is all the time I have to dedicate.

I love to scrap anything I can get my hands on but I mostly do electronics and computers. I love to dumpster dive (where ordinances allow), pick up stuff driving around, get stuff from friends, or even buy out businesses through a connection.
My wife has to lovingly look away as I do this because she just doesn't understand the immense satisfaction from finding this stuff!!

My most favorite thing to do is making connections with other like-minded individuals because it's just so much more fun to do it with pals!

So far, I feel at home on this forum because everyone is just like me - asking questions and finding their way in this scrapping world!

    Peace!

Welcome from south of Chicago. Me and my friends use to ride our bikes around and garbage pick stuff for our fort we built in the woods. I dont think kids do that now anymore

I have absolutely done that before But, you're right, I don't think kids do that anymore. I rarely see kids even making forts. Oh to go back in time where things seemed simpler.

This post resonates with me. I always loved finding stuff or making value out of stuff people throw away. Since I was little. Did it in high school for gas money sometimes. I am now in the work force but still like to scrap as a hobby, since my full-time job is not hand on at all (software engineer). I also like the "recycling"/"keeping things out of the landfill" aspect of it, as-well as the treasure hunting aspect. Its like a lotto ticket, you never know when youll find something great and/or hit big! Wives just dont understand lol!

I am still very small time at scrapping, but I do it more for fun/hobby than to make a serious profit (although I do make SOME profit, just not a lot, and not anywhere near enough to replace or touch my normal job income)

I also like E-waste the best, as I am fairly knowledgable on the subject.... and since I like taking computers apart. However since I am not always able to get my hands on computers, I expanded to other stuff too.... thrown out sporting equipment and motored-yard tools (lawn mowers, weed-whackers, pressure washers, etc) seem to be PLENTIFUL in my area, and always seem to sell no matter the condition.

I prefer computers/e-scrap, next I like resellables, and finally scrap metal as a last resort. But when Im out looking around, I take anything I can find that fits in those categories!

    Welcome!

First of all welcome to the forum.
I remember bringing home a huge cardboard box back when my 2 girls were about 3 and 4 years. I had to break it down to get it in the living room. I made windows and doors for it and the girls colored and drew on it for about a week. It was amazing how much fun they had with that box...and me included.

Well said Ben and kss, very well said. Someday kids will get back in the woods once we run out of resources to build all the fancy electronics they love so much, at which point scrappers will have inherited the earth.

Now i think about the good old times when i made a tree fort with friends. All the hours that went into this..... True i dont see kids do these kinda stuff anymore. They are just on their phones or computer all day, kinda sad, but times changes.
