Hello from Canada - First night scrapping

    Hi,

My name is Steve, 31 years old, father of 2 children and I'm just getting into the scrapping game. Work is short so instead of working for someone I decided to start scrapping. It's always been compelling to me for some reason.. probably the desire to be alone and self sufficient.

I am starting with a 2009 Honda Odyssey (minivan), today was my first trip out. I got a broken 40 inch flat screen, a few bed frames and some small electronics. I already have some other stuff in my basement I am going to bring as well. Curious to see how much I get.

I am not sorting anything, just going to bring it in and sell it.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

Welcome to SMF and the freedom this lifestyle brings with it. Trying to feed a family in this type of market will be the first challenge. I admire your sink or swim strategy. It is assumed that you plan to haul materials with the mini-van and will fill the van until full or you drive by the local scrap yard. Therefore your van will become your workshop, office, and storage. Imagine your self as a minimalist and survivalist. I realize you do not want to sort materials, but I can assure you someday you will find a what-chu-call-it that matches the thing-a-ma-jig. Therefore tools and the ability to store them will become a priority. The types of tools can be found in the advanced search option above. I own many quality tool boxes but find myself using an old plastic five gallon bucket.

Your second challenge will be a mini-van for the family or dad's start up business. Soccer mom's lack a sense of humor when they have to use a scoop shovel to create room for passengers or groceries. This alone will create many opportunities to sleep in the dog house. Word of caution, a dog house is a low priority for scrappers. Good luck to you
Give back more to this world than we take.

Thanks for the welcome Patriot. I definitely want to get more serious about it in the future and will be sorting things out soon but for now since my knowledge is limited I am just going to brute force it.

Is there one thing I should be separating, like cutting cords off TV's etc? Do all wires count as cords, like usb chargers and controller cords?

Fortunately my wife uses the Van for her dog boarding and walking so she does her own damage to it. One downfall is that I have to haul everything into the basement every night.

My routine that I'm starting is going out at 10pm and driving around collecting till about 1 or 2. Bringing it all back home and storing it in the basement until I can take it to the scrap yard every couple days. I guess I should be sorting things out since I have time but I'll have to study some more on this site before I can even begin with that.

    Thanks again.

    Gidday from NewZealand.
Non ferrous ( metal that a magnet wont stick too ) is where the money is.

Ferrous $ ( Iron / steel ) is what should cover your petrol money, maybe help with tools expenses too.
Scrapping down items & seperating the different metal types, and then their grades, is where you earn your money, it takes time, but time is $.

Research here, and find your scrapmetal buying yards & find out what they pay & what for and how they grade it. Different yards specialise in different aspects, in what they deal with, who their customers are, in what they pay out per Lb, their grades.

Theres 'escrap' too. Old computers, their boards & general electronic boards. Theres escrap buyers on this website, google search to find any that are local to you & what they buy & pay out.

Microwaves have a good chunk of Copper wire in the transformer, older ones have 2Lbs, newer ones are mostly Aluminium instead. The info about whats inside them is here.

Stay safe, wear protection, safety glasses, earmuffs & gloves, capped boots.
