This is true. I have been at it about a year now and am only profitable by a very small margin.
Ewaste is a hard one to make a ton on (as is all scrap related stuff) at first, until you build up a client base and can get things in volume. I still am not getting the volume of things I would like yet but am building slowly. If you stay it at, you CAN make a good bit of money, especially if you already have a source of steady scrap available to you.
My dream is in 5-10 years being able to fully replace my day job income with something recycling/re-use related. Just takes work and time.
