    Hello from Eastern Mass

So just wanted to say hello, I live just outside of Boston to the west and I work to the south, work in IT and have lots of stuff I would rather scrap than toss in a dumpster that ends up who knows where? I know about boardsort but would like to find somewhere local that I can take stuff too, everything from bunches of cat5/6, lots of electrical wire big and small, networking equipment, computer parts etc. Also willing to swap direct with someone if they want to take mine to add to their scrap piles if it's easier for me.

I also do garage cleanouts etc and end up with lots of stuff that usually ends up in the trash but I would like to find better things to do with old metal cabinets, washers, dryers, ACs, tvs etc if possible so less ends up in the landfills and incinerators.

Only problem I have at the moment is figuring out where a good place to take things like the wire and old PC/networking stuff that makes up a bulk of what I have right now. if anyone knows anywhere that takes working LCD monitors, that would be even better as well.

I also have some fairly heavy bits of steel too sometimes and some tips from CNC machines that have tungsten on them.

    >old metal cabinets, washers, dryers, ACs

can all go to the local scrap yard, for like $0.03-0.05/lb

    >tvs and monitors

good luck finding somewhere that will take these.... the only thing ive found to get rid of these is staples for the monitors (6 per trip) and a local landfill that will take 1 per day if you have id showing you live in the county..... tvs am monitors are a the worst

For the rest of your e-waste, there is buyers on here (or boardsort like youve discovered) but most likely you would have to take the time to disassemble it and learn what to seperate out, for it to be worth it.
The buyers here and elsewhere online have all the categories of what you can seperate stuff into and what they pay per category. So take everything apart, weigh it out, and load it on a pallet and ship it off.

That is what I do, I take stuff apart as i get it and wait until I have enough to justify sending a pallet, then send it off and cash in. The places local to me either dont take ewaste at all or pay SIGNIFICANTLY less

for example the one yard by me pays $5/lb for ram, whereas online its closer to $20/lb.... the one yard by me pays $0.15/lb for mother boards, all motherboards. The places online pay $2/lb - $5/lb for mother boards based on type.... so... you gotta calculate out if the trouble of mailing it off is worth it, or if you want to take the lower local costs (if you can find somewhere local).

I have found one place that is like 3 hrs 1 direction from me, that pays DECENT ewaste prices, but still nowhere close to what I get on here.

For wires, I take all mine to my local scrapyard and you probably can too. All the wires from inside computers and random stuff goes as dirty wire for about 45c/lb, wires of like normal stuff that plugs into the wall and cat5 wires goes as insulated #2 wires for around 60c/lb.....

if its electrical wire thats like, that would be inside a wall, with the 3 strands of solid copper inside it, that is romex wire and i think is #1 insulated and like 75c/lb.....

I would say it is unlikley to find anywhere local that will pay anything close to what you can get online (from a buyer here or boardosrt), but doesnt hurt to google a bit and see

Welcome to SMF and the virtual world of scrap. Although I do not focus on escrap, it seems to be attracted to me. I look to the old threads for information and seem lost as to high grade boards, low grade boards, green boards, brown boards, etc. Therefore a pile of ewaste has been collected sitting on a 8x40 gooseneck 4 ft. high with no plans. I hope you the best and at least better results than I have experienced.
Give back more to this world than we take.

That's the thing, I have googled them but there isn't a lot of online presence for them, but any that I have thought I found either do not reply to emails or the phone numbers don't work, so I figured finding some people locally online who would actually have real information would be a better start than spending a ton of hours driving around checking out everywhere that I found online to see if they are real and still in operation or not.

Nah, just looking for info of places people know are still in business and who takes what, most places I have found online that say they are there either do not reply to emails or contact from their site, or the phone numbers no longer work or go to a different business. So yeah, if someone here is anywhere remotely local to me and they can tell me "hey, this yard in this town, you can go here" that is all I am looking for at the moment.

Thanks, I know TVs and monitors are annoying, especially the CRT ones, my town trash pickup will take them for free if I call and tell them that I have em to pick up, no limit on it either, but no idea where it goes or what happens to it, I THINK it gets taken care of responsibly, but not totally sure.

I know I can get more online than in person most of the time, but not sure about if my volume is enough or not right now to warrant mailing it in, especially when calculating the cost to mail it in. I don't currently have a ton of space to store up massive amounts that would likely make the mailing in worth it. The smaller stuff, like RAM and processors, probably worth it, but mobos etc, not sure it is worth the mail cost for me.

So far most of the electrical wire I have has looked like solid, but when I strip it is turns out to be stranded so that is annoying but it is what it is.

    thanks!

    A couple things

I don't strip the wire, and I am assuming you probably shouldn't either by the amount you have. There are vids on youtube that in some circumstance you actually get LESS money by stripping it then if you just leave it whole and you've used your time to strip it. The prices are close enough that I never strip wire and just turn it in as is... just my opinion.

If you don't have storage space, and don't get enough to think you can fill a pallet, then e-waste probably won't be super profitable or a good use of you time. I work out of a 1 car detached garage and have sent off 3 or so pallets this year of e-waste, it piles up sooner than you would think. I take apart everything right away so I am only storing the valuable/smaller parts like the ram, cpus and mobos, the cases go to the local scrapyard.

Unfortunately getting the value out of electronics is hard work, and takes time and knowledge. Finding a local buyer for the stuff, at least for any decent amount seems impossible. So if you dont have the time, storage space, and amount to justify shipping a pallet, probably isnt worth your time then. at the very least you could rip out the ram and cpu quick and send the rest to the local scrapyard just as light iron if you need to move it through quickly and get SOME value out of it.

also with 1 min og looking on google maps I found

    https://www.framinghamsalvage.com/
    Mandracchia and Mattuchio, Boston MA

and a few others, so they are out there, just gotta find them.

I run an IT department, which is where most of my eScrap comes from, I don't have the space at home for it, but I do have some space at work for it, I just need to keep it under control since we are a business and $hit just being everywhere doesn't work super well for a department image.

I don't actually strip all the wire completely, when I said strip I was talking about taking off an end to see what was actually on the inside for shielding, wire type, etc.

I have since found a place from this post, someone sent me a direct message, they are about 10 minutes from my office and had decent prices from my POV based on seeing other stuff posted on here.

Interesting reading on here for ideas of what I can get here and there to add to what I can scrap, just need to find a way to do it without too much build up because the other half doesn't want the yard looking like a scrap yard... and I have no garage.

If you get enough stuff, and have time, a small storage locker is not that expensive, and a place you can keep the stuff while waiting to strip it down. Probably about $50/m or so you can find a storage unit, which, if you really do have a pretty steady steam of stuff, will pay for itself in no time....

as far as prices, you can see what prices you can get on here by going to
    https://www.scrapmetalforum.com/sear...archid=4066617

the wire is one of the least valuable parts of the IT equipment (dont get me wrong, it adds up over time and is worth snipping out, I def do) ...but the motherboards, ram, cpus, fingercards, etc is where all the real money is at. the rest is just cheap crap to get rid of locally that is a by-product of getting to the good stuff. at least thats how i look at it

I was thinking we could all carpool to his place and help him pound it out in a weekend? At what point do we say "Figure it out like we did" or "Read, read, read". 90 percent of us would kill to have an IT stream. And you have it dropped in your lap, and IT wages. Sorry, but I'm not sorry.

We are here to help, but yes I agree. We can't spoon feed everything to everyone. "Read read read" ... Search search search, google google google. All the answers the OP or anyone seeks are our there and easier than ever to get to with the internet at your fingertips.

Welcome aboard from western MA. Since you do not have a lot of storage available, I recommend that you get some trash barrels for the wire and for loose parts (like aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, etc. Separate everything for a better price. This gives you maximum storage until you get enough to make it worth your while. As for wire, use those trash cans to separate copper wire by type (extension cord (braided) vs home electrical (solid) wire. Also separate cat wire (copper) from tinned wire you get from computers. Same goes for all the metals. "Clean and grouped" gets you maximum yield. When yo fill up the barrels then off to the scrap yards you go. Do local vs shipping out. Get rid of locally everything that takes up a lot of room. Save the shipping for RAM, gold tabbed boards, motherboards. Junk boards can go locally. If you ever want to stop by my shop, I am located across the state near Springfield MA. You are more that welcome to stop by. My wife works for a local IT company so I get a lot of E waste and metal.

Well someone was nice enough to point me towards somewhere not too far from where my office is.

While there is a lot of info for reading, sometimes talking with a person and asking questions helps some people learn better because it's a discourse. With subjects that are vast, like this one or something like IT, yes, you can learn a lot from googling and reading, however, initially getting off the ground can be made a lot easier with a lil conversation and direction that can help get someone's head in the right space so that they can better understand what they are reading and how to find the right stuff that they should be reading.

If you don't approve of my questions, you can feel free to ignore my posts because it clearly doesn't pertain to your interests.

A little conversation is wonderful, such as "is taking heat sinks off motherboards that important?". Or "does seperating wire into different grades make a big difference?"

If you ask each question exactly as you put it, to the internet, you'll get the same answers we do. It frustrates me because if you truly are in IT, this is what you everyday. Any IT problems you ask Google. ANY. Would you like me to give you my stock picks also? How about which horse in the 3rd race?

I wish more had/or would listen to Bruce Williams. Some of the older folks know who he is. I learned to answer questions by listening to him. It was a straightforward answer. No fluff in the story, this is how it is. And so many people that called he knew would not take his advice, simply because they thought they knew better. And it wasn't so much advice as it was the answer.

I did put my questions into google, majority of my searches led me here, so I said "well maybe I should join and I can learn a bit more to what is specific to MA since there seem to be some MA people on there."

Additionally, my questions weren't directed questions, in fact, they wasn't a single actual non-rhetorical question in my OP. There were comments about what I do and what I want to do and a couple minor issues I was trying to sort out(NPI) and wasn't having a lot of luck finding the answers as I googled my questions. I would completely agree with you if I had actually come in here, not done a basic introduction and had dropped a list of questions expecting answers from people to just do everything for me, but that's not what I did, not even remotely my intention either.

Fixing a problem on a server or something else IT is much different than this, because there is generally only one answer and it doesn't matter where you live as to whether it applies to you or not. Additionally, some of the best resources I have for fixing strange problems are actually on websites exactly like this, groups of people with interests in common.

Telling your story and where you are in the scrap journey helps people get to know you, and understand your background, so they can understand the circumstances around what you say or ask, it can also give a first impression, same as responses to them can give one off. I am sure you have some witty retort, but I don't care and won't engage you further which is really what you are looking for with this line of unprompted attacks and insults.

If the place you are going to now doesn't work out, I'm out in western Mass. I don't have a buyers thread on here, but do have a bunch of places that I currently buy from.
