There are plenty of company's picking up used oil filters, it's not the oil they're after it's the heavy metals from engine bearings as they wear they shed metals like cadmium which is hazardous to the environment and those in close proximity to your furnace.
The most common steel-backed alloys are SAE 780 and 781. Alloy 780 is similar to SAE 770 (or 850.0-T5) except for having 1.5% more silicon. SAE 781 contains 1 to 3% cadmium for improved bearing properties. This alloy is used in making steel-back bearings with a 0.0005-in. overlay containing approximately 90% lead and 10% tin. The layer of babbitt improves surface properties during break-in.
If you have a good supply of used restaurant oil use it instead of waste engine oil.
One might argue that the engines oil filter has captured all of the heavy metals, this is not the case.
Understanding Engine Oil Bypass Filtration
Is your engine’s oil filter performing to your expectation? Do you even know the performance of your filter? Most people don’t, and if they did, they would be appalled.
Some of the best full-flow engine filters on the market perform at a capture efficiency of 50 percent at a particle size of 10 microns and above.
To combat the high cost of my preferred fuel - propane, I purchased an induction furnace. What I now save on fuel I now spend on crucibles.
