    Hello, New scrapper from Arizona.

    Hello,
I'm new at "scrapping", actually just started yesterday, and made $18 for about 5 mins of work picked up some steel. Well my name is Jeremy I'm 25 years old, and I'm a CNC Machinist currently out of work until further notice. I make parts for the military, NASA, mostly all government type stuff. Since getting laid off I was looking for new ways to make money so I got a job at a call center, yeah that didn't last long, and couldn't fathom the idea of some 17 year old kid yelling at me because I couldn't make 500 sales a day.

So as of right now I'm donating plasma ($55 a week), and getting into this scrapping thing. The way I've been doing it is just drive around neighborhoods I know aren't HOA, and will have stuff like that sitting outside (I drive around the ASU neighborhoods) so there's a lot of metal stuff laying around, and I just walk up & ask to take it, if no one is home I take a GPS Picture of the item, and plan on trying to get someone when they're home (If it's a lot of stuff)

Also I drive a 2002, short-bed S-10 xtreme (no trailer hitch unfortunately) 4 cylinder so it's really good on gas. Can't fir much in it, but I figure if I can cram $50 a load I can do a few loads a day once I start to get into it, and know what type of stuff to really look for, as of right now i'm just looking for anything metal.

Any tips, or advice would be appreciated like what type of stuff to avoid, what type of stuff is worth the most etc.. Thank you!

Where are you from neff - like state? Anyway, welcome to the Forum. Have you tried small auto repair shops, HVAC, electricians etc?
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Arizona, Mick... its easily overlooked in the thread because its only said in the thread title.

welcome neff, once you learn about metal grading and separating, prices will come naturally. in the meantime, study this site or any others for general ideas

    and

between these two references you will begin to understand what you should be selling your yard

Hi neff...sorry about the lay off. Happy to hear that there are still a lot of go-getters out there like you who don't just sit down and wait for a hand out. You have an advantage on most newbs by being familiar with metals and tools. I wish you the best in getting started in the biz.

What city are you in? A lot of cities here post their bulk trash schedules online...where people pile their junk of the curb. Might be able to score some metal that way
