    Hello from the UK

    Hi Guys,

Joined today and impressed with the amount of freely given info here!

I'm from England (the old one) and i've been mainly scrapping out old IT systems.
I mainly go for the "easy" Gold and Silver but have just lately been taking an interest in the copper and aluminium which, in the past, i just let the local gyppo's take away.

I have also, in the past, taken the Platinum group metals out of Catalytic Converters but decided that it is way too much hard work.

For me, this is a hobby/part time business....i drive trains for a living.

I am interested in learning new recovery techniques, methods of metal identification and also how i can melt the metals into dore bars for shipping to my local refiners.

I would also be interested in chatting to fellow scrappers in the UK as to what might be required when it comes to licenses etc...

In the meantime...lots of reading and maybe a few questions later.

    Kind regards
    Neil

Welcome to the Forum, Neil. Should be plenty of answers for you here. If not, just ask.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Hi there Neil, you will need to register as a waste carrier/dealer, broker/dealer or carrier/broker/dealer licence. If accepted it lasts for 3 years. Unless you are doing it for charity you will need to choose the upper tier registration which costs £154 which is non refundable even if you are not accepted. This should be fine however as long as you have not previously violated any waste regulations. There will be people scrapping without a licence and if you just get it from your own scrap, from friends and small purchases then you will be able to count it as domestic and I imagine be ok. However things from the streets or trading in it as a business then there are of course fines and stuff. Given the amount of metal theft, it is likely you will be stopped often by police and the first thing they will ask for is a licence.

Oh heres a link to the site for licence apps: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk...ecarriers.aspx
