Hello, names Ryan, 26 years old from Long Island. Started scrapping when all my licensed general contracting money ran out...with most of the prospective estimates. I scrapped stuff off of job sites through the years but never got any real money. I always saw guys driving around with trucks packed to the gills with metal. Figured it wasn't rocket science, and decided to learn about what scrapping was about.
Went out my first night on Halloween, I'm hooked. So far, so good. Made enough money my first week to pay off most of the bills and turn my phone back on. Started watching youtube videos on how to break down big stuff, finally putting some of my tools to use again. Started seperating my metals, started making more money. Figured out the "right times" and "right places" to lurk around on garbage nights...I need a bigger van. At this point, I go out 3-4 times a week plus on Fridays I have a few busy auto shops that I worked some things out with. I have to admit, the money is decent, I guess I live in a great geographic location for this, crowded, throw away culture, sloppy sanitation procedures, garbage nights almost every night of the week, tons of auto shops, etc. My biggest over head is the $20 in gas I throw in the tank when I go out. I just recieved a 300lb mailroom commercial scale today that I bought on
ebay. I'm definately loving my newfound means of income, I can't begin to describe how gratifying on so many levels this is for me. I've used this forum quite a few times for info, I felt it was time I finally registered and introduced myself. I promise my future posts won't be this long, this is the first time I've been able to explain where I was at with all this, I look foward to being part of this community and learning from some of you more experienced scrappers.
