    Howdy from Kansas!!

    Hello to all!
My name's Jason and I'm in Eastern Kansas. I've done a small amount of scrapping over the last 18 or so years. I've mainly dealt with old farm equipment and other materials associated with some demolition projects. Both of my Granddads scrapped part time and I've always been interested in salvage and demolition. I'm a single Dad and self employed so like a lot of others, I'm really needing the extra income. I'm wanting to put some more, dedicated time into this, but want to do it right. The one thing that I know for sure, is that I don't know much! I have equipment (dump truck, trailers, torches , saws etc.) but need the knowledge of the business.

I'm on a couple of other forums in diffrent industries and I'd say that this seems to be one of the best groups of folks that have an unreal amount of experience and knowledge and are willing to share it. That's hard to come by these days in any business. To someone new to something, it's VERY appreciated. I'm doing a ton of reading and searching the forum and have already learned a lot. I'm 100% open to any and all ideas and suggestions.

    Thanks!!

Welcome. We all had to start from some where in life. Some where born into it, and others saw people doing it and quickly caught onto to a multi billion dollar industry. Regardless of how, we all learn something new all the time.

You will find this forum and it's members just like one big family. Only difference is, no one is greedy, and no one will be asking for money! lol

I worked at Ft Riley for a year after getting out of high school back in the early eighties, not from there tho. It was always amazing how many gals were in town on military paydays.

Multi billion dollar George you realize that 90 billion dollars exchanged hands in 2011 buying and selling scrap. Thats a little more then multi lol. Anyhow Scrapdrive what questions do you have as far as your business and how to expand it the best way to find out is to ask questions and trust me no question is a stupid question in this industry. I would rather have someone ask a question about taking something apart then getting hurt trying it themselves with no experience or know how.

Thank you all for the welcomes!
I've had a lot of my questions answerwd by using the search function. One of the biggest parts of the learning curve for me is going to be figuring out exactly what materials are what (meanining exactly what something is going to be classified as at the yard) and making sure I group them or prep them properly so as to maximize the pay out. Also, what things are worth scrapping and what aren't. I'm really wanting to be able to eventually make enough with this to start working my other business part time and to be able to pay off some debt. I'm starting to make some local contacts in the renovation and HVAC industries. Hopefully they can send some scrap my way on occasion.

Welcome to the forum. Its impressive to hear you are reading the old posts without any prompting. I suspect you will do well in the scrape business. I think basic curiousity will take you a long way. In other words break things open and see what's inside, Mike.
