    Hello From Lake County, IL

Hello fellow scrappers~name is Amy, I started scrappin about 2 months ago for some xtra christmas cash. I am a single mom with a son and was surprised to see what the outcome of a little hard work could be. I have found this site to be wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! I read post every night. I am in Illinois and just read about the electronics recycling law, so my questions is, what to do now with the television that I cracked open? Any information would be helpful and thanks again for all the valuable information!

While you are unable to throw it out, google electronics recycling center. My yard takes them for free, just doesn't pay out for them. Also, where I live, the township offers free recycling. Today I went in there dropped 2 CRT monitors off, then I picked out DVD players, computers, cables, etc (my scrap yard takes computers as steel, not as electronics)

Welcome Amy. You are not to far from my neck of the woods. You have a couple local options for the TV's. You can take them to the township recycling program with the drop off on Rt. 14 ( I believe, just East of Cary, IL). Also, the Goodwill on Rt. 12 in Lake Zurich, IL takes broken monitors and TV's. What yard are you selling your scrap at?

Which yard are you using that pays as steel for electronics?

They won't pay out for monitors or TVS, but they will pay steel prices for computer towers (not laptops), video game systems, modems, phones, etc. All I do is throw them in the steel pile along with the rest of my scrap. (Last week, I brought in 10 desktop towers, along with a few DVD & VHS players, radios.

Tom, you're shorting yourself if you are selling your motherboards and other boards to the yard. There are much better outlets for them.

I don't know of any other places to take them. I also don't have a lot of time to go disassemble and part things out. The load I took yesterday it took me about an hour and a half to sort and load everything into my trailer. I go scrapping Tuesday through Thursday on regular non-holiday weeks. I store everything I find each day in my garage, and on Friday or Saturday I bring it all to the yard. I spend a total of about 6-7 hours a week scrapping, no more. I take it I may see you out during Cary's Spring Cleanup since your in the county?

Tom this is how we store our smaller stuff, copper (couple grades) alum.(ext-cast) boards, ram, misc. We just used some left over 2X4" and built a rack for the buckets and totes.

I go to Clearview Recyling in Hainesville. They are really nice to me there and told me that they appreciate that I try to break down my stuff and only give them scrap! So I haven't gone anywhere else.

Heard good things about them, but haven't had a chance to go there yet. I'm supposed to haul a couple loads there that I am picking up close to them in a couple weeks. How is there pricing? If you have a current price sheet, feel free to post it in the scrap metal prices section.

I don't have an actual sheet, probably should get one, however since I am fairly new to this I am still learning about everything that they will pay money for. I can tell you that they pay .10 a lb for metal and $2.88 lb for copper. Both have gone up since I started doing this, which has been about two months. The metal only a cent and the copper a few cents.

Thanks and hello to you as well~yes I agree, I love this site and am learning a ton! I am a social work supervisor full time and if anyone of my co-workers knew that I was making extra cash this way I would never hear the end of it (would be the joke of the office for awhile) but I really love it!
