Arrow a little bit about sars101

so hey im sars101 no relationship to "South African Revenue Service" or "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome"
if you find my name on another web site it might be me im trying to keep the same account on the forums i go on.

well im new to scrapping i now very little about the different types of metal and since i never thought about scrapping before i have lots of questions. im trying to figure out alot by watching KennyChumsky youtube videos aka bighammer and other youtube scrappers.

to day i made a wire stripper out of wood and screws used it to day and did about 10pounds of copper. of course i used a box cutter but poked my self more with it cause of the cut copper. still have alot more thinner cables probely going to see save more and scrap that later.

i been reading the older generations are feed up with the cash they are losing with the new gen but dont worry to much about me. i dont have a truck so no big things to carry around, no connections, im not into dumpster diving unless i see something i seen before while driving by.

90% of my scrap is going to be aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, gold plated in that order.
my aluminum is comming from radiators, Ac condensors, roof bike racks
my copper is comming from wire cables, fans
my brass and stainless steel and gold plated items are comming from what i see on the side of the road so not much collecting for now...

if you didnt figure it out i work at a body shop so i get all the radiators, fans, and cables before the scrapper gets near the shop.

things i got stashed away until i gather enough information on the scrap yards in my area.
7 radiators including ac condesors aluminum (different weights)
about 3 small trans cooler and lines all aluminum
    3 bent alluminum alloy rims
4 chrome rims with good used tires
1/2 roof bike rack from a 4Runner cast aluminum
1 wipper arm assembly cast aluminum only
10 pounds of stripped wire cables copper
    thinner copper wires still insulated
5 car fans already took out all the copper
    2 car batteries

if anyone can guess how much i MIGHT get it would be nice just to have a clue of how much im holding on.
im wating until i reach 10 radiators/condensors until i pick a yard and wait for the right price...

so scapping is my first hobby and a life lesson if i ever lose my job.

a few questions about this forum.
i add my avatar but i dont see it.
i cant find where to add the signatures at the bottom of each posts i make.
when is the new page going to be create the ones for noobs like me.

oh my spelling is real bad so use google if you can't under stand what words i'm trying to type

I know how it is man. when I first started I had a pile of stuff I didnt know what it was. All shapes and sizes, colors ect. Things with metal rivits and I didnt know how to get'em off .Also, you will get more alum, copper, ect, as you go on in time and figure out what to look for. find a yards phone # and call ahead, Every yard is different. For example,I live in illinois and Indiana yards pay different, so I cant say what you will get in texas isnt the same as here. I see folks gettin 3.15 for copper1 and I get 2.30 here Take your time and go by what you get the first time you bring in a load. go by that and you'll get an idea for that item. my yard pays .75 for car batterys and the place down the street from there will give me $5 for a battery. prices go up and down so if the price is lower and ya got space to store it, wait.

welcome to the forum sars. Looks like you are off to a very good start....and as long as you stay at that job you'll have a steady source. Have you thought of checking with other body shops and repair places in your area to see if they will save their scrap for you also ? Best of luck.

hi everyone i wanted to ask you something. what if your co-worker said he only wanted to scrap radiators and smaller coolers for the aluminum.

the thing is we do the same job so hes already taking money out of my pocket just by him being their cause we get paid by commision only. so each car he works on hes taking a part of my check and vise versa its ok cause hes new

this same co-worker used to work at the shop before and he used to scrap just the radiators and smaller coolers. he also mention he only wanted aluminum.

so at this point we keep what we are taking off the car. so if i take off the radiator its mine and vise versa.

so im thinking about the future cause he cant think that far if the yards around where i stay offers $3.00 a pound for copper and they offer .55 cents for aluminum radiators.

:confused:would it be a better deal if i told him ill give him the radiators and he just gives me the wires from all the cars. yeah the wires arent big but we do get more of them then radiators cause radiators the car has to be hit from the front to replace them. and wires comes from window regulators, fan motors, all types of lights, trunk lids and smashed wires oh dont forget about air bag stuff ( gold too )

i really want to make a deal with him so we wont get confused later on whos takeing what. so can i please have your imputs on my small problem.

you could pay a cheep price for them as long as you can make a profit from it. Some scrappers wont pay for anything, they expect it all for free. I once worked with a fellow scrapper and I would pay $1.00 for example a 30 lb metal display rack cause he wouldn't. Thats my take. Good luck
