Husband and wife team in Tennessee

    Hi to all!
We signed up to the forum a few days ago and have been reading and taking lots of notes. Great, great info here!

We're new to "official" scrapping but not to the whole idea of buying and reselling and salvaging in general. Been doing that on the side thru local auctions, selling wood, ebay, etc. for a while.

Looking to work up a second income (main business is painting contractor--20 years) to then replace the current one. Man, the trades have been brutal for the last several years!

Hope to be able contribute something useful soon!

Thanks for this wealth of info to help all of us diy bootstrappers out there!

Welcome to the forum Do and So.

I hear ya on the brutal times for the trades.
When things do pick back up there will be a shortage of skilled young people to fill old shoes.

Thanks, and definitely agree with that, Injunjoe. We've had all four of our kids on jobs since they were babies. Even our two daughters can paint! lol
Not sure if we're passing on a curse or a blessing!
Now the youngest (17) helps his dad every day.

PS-We're originally from Central Florida. Been in East Tennessee 14 years. Still miss the sun!

I just edited this post since I was thinking about how stupidly I put my thoughts. Really didn't mean it the way it came out.
There are so many young adults and teens who are incredibly intelligent, innovative and hard-working go-getters.
But it seems that many of my generation as parents have fallen down on their job, imho, by not helping their kids grow up
to be what they could be. And that is very unfortunate, even if unintended, since it's these young ones who end up short-changed.

So, definite kudos to all, no matter what age, who work hard, think for themselves, and get out there and DO stuff!
Hope this makes up for my very poor choice of words before.

That's great you have your own paint crew!

Everyone wants the white collar hi tech jobs these days. By being skilled in a trade will be very valuable before to long. I hope.

I blame this generation of kids on the BIG BROTHER government attitude. When your child can pick up the phone call child protective services and claim your abusing them there is a problem. When I was a kid if I would have said that to my dad he would have beat me harder then handed me the phone. When the people in government can tell you how you should raise your child you are no longer in control. I for one spank my kids when they need it. They dont like my rules they can go live in a foster home My parents are foster parents so my kids have seen the kids that come from those situations.

There is one thing both my mother and father made sure I knew....you cant print money....if you want to ONLY get by paycheck to paycheck then I have it easy...unless I need to pay a bill...but if I want to make something for my self...you have to jump in with both feet and two hands and do what ever it takes.

And welcome to the forum....the trades have been real hard even for a pipe hand here (was a pipe fitter for the power plants) but the jobs dried up and there are to many workers needing a job so I moved onto this and....its been a long but great road!

Thanks for the welcome! We're in the foothills of the Smokies, just outside Knoxville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg.
Funny, once we've decided to quit hauling our "junk" to the dump and make some money with it instead, my
husband's work really picked up...really unusual for January, and that's even on good years.
I'm busy gathering and can't wait til we can get out in the garage and start ripping and stripping

So much to do, so little time...

PS-We love Nashville. Spent a few days there for our anniversary a few years back.

PPS-This forum cracks me up...never leave without a good laugh!
