    New Guy

    Hey everyone!

My names Jeff, and just stumbled upon the site. I've skimmed the forums so far and really like what I see and a wealth of information on the scrapping game.

A little background on myself, I'm 21 and newly independent (finally left the parents) and am currently working musician down in Charleston, SC.

I got interested in scrapping just trying to make a little extra income. It started collecting the tons of beer cans from my friends houses after parties and taking them down to the recycling center at the end of every week. I had no idea there was so much money at least to me for scrapping, just scrapping all the cans as allotted me an extra $40 or so a week...yes we're alcoholics

I haven't yet dived into anything else, I've been researching scrapping copper and other metals from tvs and other electronics. It's really sparked my interest and am looking to get into it as maybe a part time venture to make a decent income on the side.

Any advice starting out would be appreciated! Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Welcome to the forum and here's to not getting so desperate that you start scrapping equipment. Best advise I could give is to grab a forty and start reading the old posts.

Man I hope not lol. Though I can't lie I have ripped apart plenty of broken amps for parts to build custom pieces. Maybe I can scrap the left overs

And sounds good, I've been reading through everything for the past couple hours. One issue it looks like I'm going to run into is that I have to have a permit issued from your local sheriff here in SC to scrap copper, they're free, I just don't know if they pretty much give them out to anyone or if I may hit a snag with that. We'll see tomorrow, going to mosey on down there and see what's up.

    Thanks for the welcome!

If your going to do TV's and monitors please read up on how to properly dispose of the tubes. Someone mentioned crushing them and I had to grit my teeth. Once you break them you are creating a hazardous waste. Other than that, figure out what you'd like to scrap or whats available. Welcome

I got to looking for that Goodwill recycling thing locally, found there's about ten stores in my district, and emailed the headquarters for it, asking if they had a recycling program here for picture tubes from TVs and monitors. Got an email back the same day from the regional manager saying yes they do, but i haven't asked any specifics, guess i'll save that for the nearest store

I took my first 6 in after being told they would take them stripped, now they say to leave them intact. So I'm gonna pull the wiring and yoke and leave the circuit board (it's low grade anyway) and put the back on it.

welcome to the forum Capthair. Lrt me give you your lesson on scrapping. To most of us on this forum scrapping is not a game it is the way we make a living. before you start scrapping electronics please learn what to do with the waste because some of it is toxic, stick with the cans and other metals first, thats just my advice. Good luck and hope to hear from you soon.

Have a good look around the circuit board first, get to know it, some have a fair bit of Cu wire on them, enough to push 2Lb up to 1Kg...... (one hundred grams...)
