Well, is there any solid reason I can give on why I bought the copper wire on the reels? We ne'er see it like that but surely others see it a lot right?

He's bringing in spools of brand new copper wire and you're not suspicious? You can pay him for 1,000 to 2,000 pounds of copper per load but can't afford a lawyer? You paid CASH for that much copper?

How long have you been in business?
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

I deal with the largest scrap buyer in the Northern Virginia/Maryland areas, and they would NEVER buy copper or wiring of any kind on spools. They tell you straight up that it might be OFF the spools. Also if your stuff is incased in metal, they require you to take it out.

Unfortunately for you, the way you handle the business practice, there is several things that is the wrong way of doing things, and that ultimately makes all the targets they will need.

Also, I have to agree with everyone, your shelling out $10's of thousands of dollars for scrap, and cannot afford a lawyer? Every company needs to have a lawyer they can contact for these situations.

Hopefully when it is all over with, the company the guy stole from, isn't the new owner of your yard.

No attorneys until charges are actually filed. Make sure you know everything said to the other attorney and document it. The scale operator is more than likely the one going to be charged. They could come after you as well, but the majority of the time charges are filed to force full cooperation in prosecuting the other party. Have cash available for some type of settlement in case of a civil suit.

But this is an Epic fail on so many levels. Never buy new off a spool, cash should have a cap of X # of $'s, the list goes on. Good luck and keep us posted.

You need an attorney ASAP. Don't speak to the other attorney any longer. Find an attorney and direct all calls to him, you've already said too much. Do you have an insurance policy that covers you under these circumstances? Look into all of this first thing tomorrow.

Bottom line is, if you can afford to shell out thousands and thousands of dollar for scrap, then you can afford a lawyer. A lawyer who knows your states laws and county laws and can give you 100% secure legal advice. NONE OF US CAN!

Let this be a lesson to anyone that wants to go into busniss. 1) get a lawyer that knows the laws of your busniss. 2) make sure you know or have in wrighting the laws of your busniss. 3) make sure your emploies are upholding the laws of your busniss. If the yard I use saw me come in with spools of bran new wire they would have taken my ID and called the police at once. You need to document everything that took place with photo's of the guy and what ever info you have and keep them in a file and I don't mean on a computer but on paper of every transaction with case. Have your ducks in a row and get a lawyer. Most lawyers will work with you and make some kind of payment plan. I wish you all the luck in the world and I hope you have learned something from all this. You might be able to work something out like paying the co. back for the price of the metals that you bought all though it will be alot more than scrap price. By the way, maybe this is none of my busniss but how did the compainy know that you were the one that bought the metals?

The guy would buy material and then call my shop. So they have phone records showing him calling us, plus a couple of people that rode along with the guy witnessed what was happening.

and you honestly think they will be good Samaritans when they are in just as much trouble as he is? I wouldn't count on them being on your side.

Starting to sound that way to me too. The more responses he gets the more the story is changing....on to another thread for me.

What has changed? At first i was hesitant to say some things due to your first post but then over nigjt i decided i might as well tell yall the deal and see how bad it is.

Do people come to forums and make up stories like this a lot or something?

All i was wanting was help on determining what laws i have broken and how their lawyer is going to stick me with this since we bought what was assumed to be scrap metal.

You "assumed" new copper wire on large spools was scrap? Enough wire in fact to double your yards daily profits? I've heard to never assume anything.
In your first post you asked "how to make it go away" Gotten a "little bit pregnant" maybe?
Along about #21 you're asking for some suitable alibi you can use

This forum is filled almost daily with threads discussing yards buying stolen scrap, and sellers who bring it, maybe you should look some of them up for your answers
