UK situation.'Collectors Licence'

Hi All,
Question re UK 'Collectors Licence'issued by Local Counties here'(2013)
Supposed to have one if 'collecting';'door to door'
Even if your taking away stuff 'for free'!
Licence is about 900 pounds a year.
Well my collecting is more 'trashcan' to trashcan' than door to door.
I rarely if ever pay for the trash.
Just wouldnt make economic sense.
Small and infrequent amounts on foot.
What are chances of local authority worrying about this?
A 'tramp' recycling a few bags of kettles now and again?
Stories in the press aim at systematic Van collection of whole streets
for cash.
Any ideas pls?

$1,200 is a lot for a 'license' .
Seem to me someone doesn't want 'small time' scrappers in jolly ol' England

The licence your referring to is for knocky on the door collections for charity.

A site licence will allow you to operate a site and collect any scrap relevant to that site.
A collectors licence will allow you to collect scrap only within the authority area that it was issued.
You will need to apply for collector's licences from separate authorities should you wish to operate in more than one council area.

The best source of information will be found at the local level. There's just no substitute for that. If you can't find the relevant information online, or don't understand how it applies to you, don't be afraid to make an inquiry in person. You can call them if you want, but I prefer making personal visits because I've found that people are less likely to be rude or dismissive when face-to-face. As long as no one follows you out of the building wearing a trench coat (with the brim of their hat pulled over their eyes) you'll be fine.

It would depend on the community you live in or are removing items in, if they are lax on enforcing the law you could get away with it with no license. Until they decide that they want to mess with you that is, then you would want to have your bases covered and have the license. Good luck out there and let us know if you are or are not going to get this license.

No doors involved unless its hinges and handles lol.
Very gray area.
Boot(thrift)sale cast offs from automobile trunks in fields,
With permission general commercial retrieval.
Debris from gayrage hobbies,long term storage,unsold ebay merchandise,
etc.
None of this fits 'door to door' cash in hand.
Certain trades like electricians are permitted to sell off without a licence.
With a licence you need to record every single acquisition in a book
like 6" length of old wire found by highway...value 3 p (cnts)!Gets really silly!l

I do not know which area you live in, or which areas you 'collect' in, but according to Google, licenses are required in most UK locals ....
Example I fond:

A licence is required before any person can collect scrap metal or run a scrap metal site. As the Local Authority we are responsible for issuing the licence.
