Is a business license necessary if you are just starting out? This is just going to be part time for now.

I would guess this depends on your local rules and regulations. I am not required to have a business license in the states of South Dakota and Wyoming. Specific communities in these states may have different requirements that I am not aware of. I do not have any employees or a physical place of business and pay the taxes as personal income. Neither state has a personal income tax. The topic has come up before and some members are required to have a business license, but I do not know their specifics.
Give back more to this world than we take.
If you are just starting out, don't have a physical location of business, employees or any expensive equipment such as a crane, then may God help the state or jurisdiction that requires a business license. If you look up words like picky or greedy in the dictionary, I'd hope their photo would be next to it!
Going off your username, it sounds like you're doing E-Waste. Best answer I can give is: Maybe. Check with your state's DEQ/DEP/whatever it's called in your state- they should have that stuff online if you do a little digging. As for municipality licenses, or tax certificates, that too depends on your state. If you want to handle CRT monitors or old TVs, you can expect red tape there though

Hi pcecycle, I saw that you have have been already doing some ewaste and yes you should check your local and state regs on that. You should be ok with just filing as personal self-employment income if you use your name in your busniess name, ie, Bob's recycling, but if you are going to name your business any other way, you might need to file a "doing business as" paper with your local gov.
I started by checking my city regs and then county and then state. It can be different for all those. Also be careful when reading about "at home business" in the city regs, mine has provisions for not running a scrap business from or through your home residence so I have had to restructure my business when I moved here. Laws are written to be interpetted, so read them carefully.

Thanks for all the replies. Living in an unincorporated area of Alabama, it is difficult, most people I have contacted do not even know what I mean when I ask about electronics recycling.
