Electronics thrown out after storm... and how test a power supply?

We just had a derecho storm move through the area a couple of days ago. Not as bad as last year but some people did lose power. And then when it got restored, people had power surges. I talked to two people who had trouble with their computers and electronics. Then last night I picked up an XBOX 360 from the nearby dump. The power supply shows orange, the console does not turn on. Maybe just the PS got fried...

So dumpster diving after storms with widespread loss of power might be a good idea

Speaking of the PS: this is a power brick model hp-aw203ef3 with 6-"prong" power cable (as shown here for example). I thought testing it with a multimeter would be easy. I tried attaching the probes to different pairs of prongs and always got 0. Maybe it is indeed fried, or maybe I am doing it wrong? What's the right way to test a PS like that?

Orange light on the power supply means it's in standby mode, (no power to console) borrow or get another PS to test it, look at the plug area some have a locking pin on the plug and some don't, either match it or break the plastic pin.

Just a thought...check the usb ports...a lot of times kids are tough on them and plug stuff in wrong bending and shorting out the pins, unbend the pins so they're not touching and you'll have power. (This was the problem with the last one I picked.)

They do make computdr power testers...amazon or newegg. If you cant tell on xbox by trying the above suggestions..try to sell it as a "parts" unit on ebay and say no power where someone cant come back on you.

Failing all that...the xbox has a great motherboard and hard drive...so tear into it. Make sure you have the right star tools though...they are built like a friggin tank and are a pita to get open otherwise....I have had to do both ways.
