Do any metal casting?

I've been thinking about adding a section for this, I've seen a few very interesting threads/posts about this topic.

However I'd like to see how many of you have any experience OR interest enough in such a topic to create a new section for it.

Chime in and let us know your thoughts, if you have experience in metal casting or are interested in it.

I am very very interested in the topic of metal casting. I have been acquiring the pieces of equipment to make a casting furnace over the last 6 months and would love to hear from others with more experience. I have the equipment and experience to be able to scan an object and carve the object in foam and plan on using the lost foam method of casting when I gain some more knowledge on the metal melting/casting part of the equation.

I would be interested as well!

I use the foundry at my local high schools metal shop as i went there as a kid and the same teacher is still there. I find this is the best way for me because he has a lot of forms for casting all ready made and a lot of the other machines "metal lathe. drill presses, metal ban saws ext. are all there to finish projects. nothing more gratifying than picking up a tool for a job and knowing you made it with your own hands. As far as using scrap metal i think you would have to refine it somewhat to get more of a "pure metal" for a lot of byproducts can compromise the integrity of the metal. I was buying ingots to make my tools so have not tested using scrap but i just might try it now that it has been brought to my attention . i love foundry work and would love to "buy" a real furnace for a consistent heat that can be easily maintained as opposed to a homemade furnace but don't let me disscourage anybody in making there own and would love to hear results of homemade furnaces. remember liquid metal is nothing to play around with and all saftey precautions should be taken i have seen foundry accidents and it is no joke!

I just went to Lowes to but the the stuff to make a forge furnace. It is all sitting right here next to me. I will have to post something about it. Junior and myself are going to be melting alum. in the back yard any day. I will report the results.

I'd be checking it out too. Not for reselling as bullion but just to make cool stuff. If you make reverse molds with plastic ones you could make just about anything that already has had a play-doh or cake mold. What I mean is make the mold in clay, dry (bake, whatever) and make a mold of the mold. Then you could cast just about anything out of cans. Or maybe that wouldn't work??? Let's start the section and find out!

I am doing this because my Son is a ten year old YouTube freak. He found video to make a furnace. The guy calls it a flower pot furnace. It is very easy to make. I bought everything for $50 at Lowes and probably had a few things here but for simplicity sake bought it all. I will post the link to the video below. It was just to easy to pass up on the opportunity. I am now a stay at home Dad. I work around the house and run around in the mornings but spend most of the day with the kids.

I have a lot of experience in different things. I have done many things. I want my kids to be functioning men. So we do stuff, build things, projects. Got to get them off the xBox. I just want my kids to understand the world and how things work. You may not be able to buy it someday. McGuyver is no longer on TV!!!

I am going to cast some simple Alum. Ingots and maybe sell on eBay. I do plan to take on some more interesting casting projects in the future. For now it is just me and junior in the yard catching stuff on fire and melting things!!!



I have to tell you I feel this is a must watch video. When you see how easy it is you'll be running to Lowes.
