    old vw heads

i have about a couple of dozen old type 1 vw heads. they seem to be aluminum except for the exhaust and intake studs and the valves and springs. i heard a rumor that they could be some kind of aluminum alloy but not sure how to test. any ideals?

Magnet. Doesn't stick, it goes as aluminum at most yards.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

If they are not junk, are not cracked then they may be worth a whole lot more than scrap. I would be checking potential resale value on eBay or Craigslist before junking. If you do scrap, valve seats will also have to come out to get clean aluminum price. Time spent removing steel and misc. may not pay well, but that's your choice and my .02.

    Cast aluminum.

Check the studs, check the fins, and check for cracks if you're planning to resale.

first off, thanks for the responses. i have free time on my hands so i TRIED removing the stud and after a few failed attempts with a couple of busted knuckles and a near cutting disk laceration, i took one of the head with me to my scrap yard. she is going to give me dirty aluminum prices. the heads are not worth resale or at least i wouldn't use them if i was still building VW engines. i also found out today that the chrome bezels on the taillights and around the headlights are chromed brass and the front turnsignal covers are stainless along with all the screws that hold them on.

Actually a lot of Volkswagen parts are were made out of magnesium. One way to check is to grind a small section of it and pour some vinegar on it. If it turns black it is magnesium if it does nothing then its aluminum
