My recycler won't accept disposable aluminum pie and turkey pans. They aren't used. He says he used to sneak them through, but whoever he sells his scrap to won't accept them. Is there a reason why?

The big buyers of UBC don't like it when other aluminimum is mixed in with the can stock. If I have a few mixed the yard I go to pulls them out and they go into there own pile.Originally Posted by blt123

because the aluminum is so thin it oxidizes and burns up into gas at the mills/refinineries when they melt it down. it doesnt make sense for them to buy materialo they cant recover anything on. Needs to be handled separately to recover the aluminum

Sell it as contaminated Aluminum, aluminum foil, pie pans, aluminum trays frozen dinners are put on, a lot of cat food cans are contaminated aluminum. I have one yard that only pays $.09 a pound. Then the yard that I sell almost all aluminum to, pays $.15 to $.20 a pound for contaminated aluminum. Can you guess who I sell to? I have maintenance contract with three day care schools and they get all their meals in these large food trays and it adds up!

Interesting that the yards have so many different sub categories. I guess it depends on their buyers.

Mine will make you go through the dumpsters and pull out anything OTHER than cans lol. I have to put my foil and pans into my sheet aluminum. I learned the hard way - dad saves his cans for me and he also puts rolled up foil in the bags. First time I dumped his bag into the bin with my stuff one of the guys was there and told me the foil can't be in there. I had to go in and get it out. Lesson learned - check dads bags first and rebag appropriately!!

I bale it up and sell it as clean aluminum. I also mix in my other aluminum (window frames, etc) but most is foil. Last time I think I got $0.45/Lbs

What about the food foil wrappers? Like Pop tarts, protein bars, hershey's kisses wrappers? I've been saving the food wrappers separately, but it will take some time to make a pound of those. Does anyone else even bother? These things are everywhere.

jillyenator, those lids are also considered contaminated aluminum. similar to foil and cooking trays some can get hedged into sheet alum but in the case of a large volume of labels, the printed material actually makes up a lot of the weight of the lid thus decreasing its value. depends on how generous the scale man is that day, you might get lucky and toss it in the sheet.

One yard will buy aluminum like that and one won't. It's weird but, like others said it depends on the yards buyers.
I do toss stuff like that into one can and once I think I got like .75 cents for a large green bag of that ''soft'' aluminum lol.

I believe most food wrappers are actually mylar not foil. The hershey wrapper is foil laminated paper I think.

^^Which, is recyclable at some yards! Lol, not that anyone would ever have enough of those to equal a lb but, recyclable just the same!
