Found two dressers from (I'm guessing) the forties today, both pretty solid but needing cosmetic attention, may be branching into the refinishing business.

Just pulled about 1200.00 retail worth of halloween costumes and stuff out at a dumpster last night behind a seasonal halloween store that was vacating its space this week. I might head back in a few minutes as I only took what I could fit in my Buick and there was a ton of stuff left. Any divers who can do something with this stuff should hit them as soon as possible. It is probably a narrow window between them cleaning out their space and the dumpster getting hauled off. Coolest piece is a nasty little 2 foot tall clown-baby figure with lightup eyes, a head that spins and an evil laugh that freaked out my ten yr old to the point that I had to put it back in the box!!
I already set a reminder in my calendar to dig this stuff out for sale next september. Should be able to pull .50 cents on the dollar from Ebay.
I just rescued an air concentrator yesterday. It is a top of the line model. They sell for around 900 new. This one has a sticker that says WPB VA. That would be the West Palm Beach Veteran's Admistration. I end up at a VA usually once a month taking residents to appointments and I will end up dropping it off at one of them. It works fine and was just abandoned. I would love to sell it, but since we all paid for it with our tax dollars, I will make sure that it gets back to them.
Being used they might pitch it. I've got bottles of brand new medications they send out and when the doc changes my med's they don't want the other back. They told me to pitch it or give it to a free clinic. I can't see just throwing hundreds of dollars worth of med's away. So, free clinic here I come,,,

My "best find" so far was on the curb. A working Maytag Plus fridge. Took it home, plugged it in and it worked!. Cleaned it up a lil and still using it to this day. As for the dumpster I have found two darn good tool boxes. Snap on. One med. size base and the other that sits on top. Good quality stuff without so much as ding! Still using them today also. For some reason I find a lot of tools a too. Some good, some cheap. Found a battery powered drill with two batteries and charger in the case. Worked just fine. Shoot, all this remen..reminnn.,. all this remembering making me wanna go hit dumpsters now!

Reminiscing?
What types of dumpsters are you finding this stuff?
Apt complexes? Commercial/industrial? Other?
The few times I've gone diving, it's been actual trash. Nasty, wet, stinky, slimy trash.
I also have a concern of getting stuck by a needle.
Mostly we stick to the businesses. Auto parts stores, muffler shops, small mechanic shops. Also a few stores like Office Depot, Innovative Audio (car stereo installers), Sherwin Williams Paint store ( 3 batteries so far, go figure that one). Don't really fool with apt complexes. And we don't actually go in the dumpster. Got a couple of 3 ft sticks with hooks on em. Works pretty good.
what time of day do you hit these dumpsters...i know after close if a cop sees you leaving a business thats probable cause to pull you over so i was just curious lol
No set time really. We go both during business hours and after. Most folks know us and what we're doing. Plus my wife knows alot of the local law enforcement thru her job and they know me thru her and what I do. So that helps out quite a bit.
Just found two desk sized photocopiers that both appear to be new. Might try to see if they work before I smash them.

Nice find, i got 3 new oil filters today and about 20 pounds of brass sink fixtures.
anyone know a website that will clearly define the laws of dumpster diving..im sure i could call the cops and see but that would be a last option, i dont think ill be taken seriously to be honest
Your not gonna get a finite answer unless you call. But best thing to do is ask the dumpsters owner and tell them you want to remove the recyclable material and in return you will clean up around the dumpsters. Get a form for them to sign so you have written permission and keep that in your car. otherwise its a carp shoot of getting in and out and hoping your not on camera.
I work for a sanitation company and empty dumpsters all day long, so I've found my fair share of good things in the dumpster. Some that come to mind are.
-A prosthetic arm. I thought it was real until I pulled it out.
-About 70 neon beer signs. They were all the same and none worked, but took them apart and got about 8 working ones out of all of them.
-Boxes of gold filled glasses
-Marvy barber pole
-sterling barker brothers compote
-box of Canadian silver half dollars
- 14k Gold mens ring
-About 50 running lawn mowers
-About 75 perfectly good bikes including a Schwinn phantom(bad condition)
-A few working snow blowers
-5 carhart jackets all brand new
-All my shoes/boots I wear are from dumpsters... All brand new
-Most of the cloths I wear are from the dumpsters... most brand new or slightly used
The list goes on and on.
The owner of the company I work for has been picking up trash for 45 years. He has built a massive shed with everything he has found in the garbage over the years. The whole thing is filled with glass display cases full. The things in the display cases are unreal. It is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
