I finally read through this whole thread as I hadn't finished reading it and it took me awhile to find it again as I didn't save it or remember for sure what the title was.

I did find it pretty quickly with the forum search feature as I remembered the key words.

    on to the topic:

I have been saving many useful items over the years that I just set aside. I have been going through things and getting rid of what I figure I can do without as I have more stuff then I know what to do with in my favorite collections and hoards.

I'm finding many interesting items that I had forgotten about and some things that I never saw before as I'm just getting around to looking through the boxes. Some is stuff that others sorted and some is stuff that I hauled home or others brought to me and I never got around to going through the stuff.

As for what I hang onto?

the cool & interesting stuff for sure as well as the hardware & tool assortments.

WHEELS? YES I save them all, but I do use some, sell & trade or give some away. I see no good reason to toss or scrap any wheel that is in usable condition. I hauled a folding childs stroller home the other day that no one wanted as I looked at the plastic wheels and saw that they were in good condition without cracks or excessive wear. The smaller wheels have MANY hobby uses as they are lightweight, yet strong for their construction and materials. And most times they have interesting colors as well as shapes. They can be used for replacement buggy wheels or arts & crafts where you want the BIG fat tire look.

Found this topic interesting so figured I would add.

I keep the steel rods and any metal tubes from printers to use as lathe 'barstock'. Its good clean tough straight steel rod. Old brass tube from radio and TV antennas and the extruded Ali tube off the rooftop antenna.
Engineers need this sort of material, for hobby engineers and for gunsmithing. Antenna Ali tube makes good garden stakes.

I keep all optical stuff I find, lenses and mirrors.
Also I keep the optical 'eyes' from scanners, computer mice and older video recorders and the S.A.W devices I find in CRT tv's, are kept for escrap jewelery.
The sheets of plastic, white, clear and prisimatic from flatscreen TV's for, well, something, they look too good to chuck out..

Gas bottles and opened fridge compressor cases for making 'old school' reproduction cannons. Like what the Pirates used. Also the long semi forged bed bolts.
Taller thinner gas bottles and steel pipe, and broken cast Ali garden seats, to make reproduction hand operated water pumps for gardens. (the cast Ali parts are for the scrollwork handles)

Thin glass tube from backlit flatscreen TV.s for, well, something.....science stuff? I might try glass blowing it tonight now.....see what happens.
Magnets, magnets, magnets ,magnets, magnets, and more magnets....... and even more magnets.

    Paintpails to put everything into...
And actual paint too. For some reason lots of it, just a rusty tin or a only 15% full but its free. I got me some Zinc paint a few days before I needed to buy some last week.. And some orange lead paint, just need some turpentine to thin it out again. White paint for my house weatherboards.
    .
Anything that looks like it works or could be fixed so it does. I got a 4th welder last week (3 invertors and) then the 'transformer with a electric volume control. sort. Its heavy but its a grunter. This week I think I found its little trolly in the same place. The (x5) Hitachi 9inch anglegrinders.

Last week, a fridge/freezer. The owners dropping it off. I ask "does it work?" He says, "Yeah its good, but this little fan thing gets stuck sometimes, but we are upgrading our kitchen anyway..."
    Mine!
Its a slimline fridge, I have a small kitchen, I got a slimline electric stove too. I need a slimline dishwasher now...

Trampoline tube for gokarts, maybe garden glasshouses frames(with plastic sheet)
The oven glass, its safety glass, for a friends glasshouse. Its exactly the right size.

Theres lots of other stuff I find and keep. But I hardly ever find anything collectable.

    a little bit of everything.
mostly hardware/fittings and stocks sheet, pipe, round bar, square bar, plate, angle ext.
I'm probably bordering on having my own personal hardware store at this point.

I'll never have to buy a binder clip again as long as I live. I keep these in the garage right by the two or three boxes of used lightbulbs. It seems that when people replace chandeliers, they just throw out the old bulbs with all that beautiful brass tubing (which is VERY hot right now as steampunk costume parts!)

Anyway. Light bulbs & binder clips. And 74/75 printer cartriges. I have two (found) printers that use those cartriges. Oh... and printer paper. I have about 2 feet thick of printer paper. Blank CDs/DVDs. SD cards out of cellphones (often with entertaining imagery on them!!!) I'm sure there's more, but you get the hint. If it's sanitary & reusable and I'll ever have to buy it in the future, I'm keeping it.

Only thing I've ever kept from a scrap run was a lcd i got from a lady. Brand new 32" off-branded tv. Lady chases her 1yo around the living room to be playful, trips over the tv cord, there goes the tv. Bottom's cracked so I have a funky L-shape of the right corner I can't use, but I saved it because it was the only tv in the house with an hdmi port on it and it's mostly usable.

Figured I would bump this as it is a interesting read for sure.

I like to look over the who's online pages and see what the bots are looking at. Find many interesting older threads that way.

I used this thread to check out some of the old well known members profiles, the writing is on the wall, the scrap forum is dead.
