Scrap that you collect or keep for yourself?

I also have an affinity for cast iron skillets and dutch ovens. I have about 6 old Schwinn bikes that I have fixed up sitting in my garage and a pile of cool things I have pulled from the shred pile sitting in my office at work. It got to a point where my girlfriend enacted the "one in, one out" rule when I bring stuff home, making me carefully choose my treasures.

I tend to keep stuff that i can see a future use for like angle iron, plate steel, all kinds of tubing, working electric motors, etc.. I also live with my dad who complains about my pile until it comes time that he needs a certain item and prices it out to order and i tell him i have it out in the pile and then he doesn't mind so much.

I have older euqipment, and do all of my own repairs. I also build several demolition derby cars per year, so I find myself saving back all kinds of iron pieces. Probably have a couple of tons hoarded just for this. Save aside all kinds of other nifty stuff too, most only in need of minor repai, if any at all.

Have a stack of 486 processors and Intel Pro's. Just couldn't send em in. Cause once gone, I have to start my piles over! LOL
I might just wait till I have 10 lbs each. But who knows... at 10lbs ill wait to 20lbs.
Who new I'd druel over old processors again.

aluminum cots. useful for camping, extra house guests, relaxing by the fire pit...I just love those things.

I usually tend to sell everything i get, when it gets closer some stuff ill hoard, just in case winter or economy brings a slow periord or, if cars drop to 100$ a ton againt like 08/09

I curb shopped an electric dryer, metal drafting table and small chest freezer last night. Everythings going to the yard except the chest freezer which will become a keg-arator. It doesn't cool down but we will make it work and hopefully achieve a lifetime goal of cold beer on tap at home 5 gals at a time

I keep almost every long piece of square tube I find and other various angle iron and flat iron. Anything I can use to build a pickup bed trailer ill keep. I've used old iron for the last 3 trailers I've built and it saves
Me around $200 versus buying new.

I stack many things for SHTF scenarios, now that i'm a scrapper doing e-waste & hard rubbish times I'm finding lots of things
that could come in handy one day so yeah, I stack things instead of scrapping too.

heat sinks for instance, global warming might mean one day i'll need to stick 'em on my roof to cool the shed, pc fans incase
I need to build a bunker, for ventilation aswell as vacuum hoses to connect it.
hard drive platters for communication, use 'em as signal mirrors, magnets to line the walls to conceal radio waves so aliens can't find me, oh the list is endless, that reminds me, I really should start using up all them cans of baked beans, was strange when I bought them, the use by date was 12/12/12 they must of figured the mayans are right so there's no need for a longer use by?

I'm horrible - I have a tendency to keep washers, screws, nuts, and bolts. I always have though! I also have some ic chips that have my birth year on them.

tsssk tssssk Ben! The first rule of prepping is to never let anyone know about your stores and supplies. Hope you are hoarding brass and lead also to protect what's yours.

I have established a habit of keeping any items that cost more to replace than I would get at scrap price. I used to throw extra screws and such away after assembling a product and finding they had included a few extra pieces. Now, I sort them out and toss them in my parts bins. Even if the price of the part is less than scrap price, which is almost always a fallacy, the gas to get to town definitely outweighs the price. I do much of my own repair and maintenance.

I worked with my uncle at a service station and mechanic shop for quite some time and I’d set a coffee can in the shop next to the scrap bin. I asked the guys to throw fuses, bolts, nuts, washers, spark plugs, et cetera in that can. Most of the parts were good, granted I had to check the fuses, spark plugs, and such.

I don’t, however, let myself become emotionally attached to other such things I acquire from salvaging/scrapping. I’m just kind of a parts ***** [collector]. I think that if you start keeping things around you’re going to start pouring money into a money-sink.

I have a tendency to be a bit of a hoarder...not like the poor souls on that TV show, by any means, but just a 'keeper of useless detritus'. So, I have to be real careful with this issue... to the point that I end up scrapping things that I really oughta have kept. So far I've only kept a few neodymium magnets, a perfectly good plastic toolbox, an electric tower fan, one solid copper heatsink (my only useless keep), and me & the missus are probably going to hold onto that 800 dollar exercise bike I got at CurbCo (3 doors down from Ross Perot's house).

Thing was like-new, but the resistance wouldn't change during the programs it would run ... I took the side panel off, shook a couple of wires, blew off a smattering of dust from the circuit boards and, viola! It works now.

I intend to save the next few sets of bedrails I get to make improvements to my trailer, too.

I collect laboratory glass and equipment. Of course I use most of it on a fairly regular basis. But the majority has come from remarketers or scrappers...
