See, I originally started scrapping to amass a huge collection of parts... And ended up making some money at it. Now, I do it to make money, but I still keep a ton of parts.

I generally keep stuff worth way more than scrap value... At my shop any old bikes (20+ of 1950's and earlier), copper fire extinguishers (have 10 now), old browning cameras.... My list goes on.. Generally I google it to find a value of what the item sold for... If it makes since to hold it I do. My theory is once these old irreplaceable items are gone I will have some yo keep and sell... With the economy I am finding people scrapping most anything to get money. they want the quick cash instead of waiting to sell on ebay or Craigslist.

For now only thing I keep is ceramic CPU's, and any metal that can be used for crazy Ideas that I come up with.

Kind of new here, I collect old woodworking and metalworking tools and machines, or anything that can be used to fix it up, or can be sold to fix it up. The rest is scrapped and used to pay bills.

What a great thread! I have trouble letting go of cool things, and tend to think like a prepper. I have way too many vintage things that it bothers me to even think about selling. I really need to imagine turning those things into money for a house down payment...

Does anyone keep wheels? Wheelbarrow wheels, plastic lawnmower wheels, toy cart wheels? Seems like they could be useful.

I keep quite a few things. Wood if in good contiditon, for my wood working projects, have kept some electronics I've gotten, couple radios come to mind. I had a pile of working tube tv's I've gone through an and made smaller. Either given away to folks I know needed one, my own use, family, sell to some as they need'm. I keep most tools I find unless they don't work, mainly hand tools as I don't get many power. Have a nice collection of older hand saws I got from a yard sale for free, an some other things.

Have kept several original records, either for myself or as gifts for others. Like Burly, it's usually just stuff I consider cool, or think I may have a use for in the future.

So yes..I do keep some of the crap..err treasures I find, much to my better half's dismay..unless she likes it. lol.

I should've mentioned my two copper pieces. The candle holder, I've posted before I think, an a copper or brass cup, I really should check one day. Old old old, an i love it. Both obtained from thrift stores.

I have no problem recycling brass, but for some reason I have a thing for copper. It is just so pretty. I have a hard time scrapping copper items, other than wire.

I also like pewter, but have no idea why. It's not like it's particularly shiny or colorful. It just seems to have a nice heft to it.

I have two old 1930s typewriters that I am saving for no real reason - I find them beautifully sculptural.

Hinges, furniture hardware, tools, and lighting......find it, then keep it. Eventually sell it for more than scrap.

Hinges! That's cool. I guess anything can be saved up and sold in lots - computer screws, cabinet pulls (even ugly ones), clock gears, printer cogs, toggle switches, computer ports, cord plugs? What do people save up?

I have a thing for furniture casters. I will pull them off of any dead furniture I find and save them.

I have a time clock that is being saved. Hated every job I've had that I had to use a time clock. It is kind of a reminder to work hard and be smart so as to not have to use a time clock ever again.

i have enough bmw parts to fill a 20 foot container.... but i use them and sell them. i help cars that would otherwise die and get parted/crushed live on with my hoard saves me tons of money, tons of trips to the parts store.... some things are just too valuable to scrap IF they are functional
