    Computer drives and ram

So I decided to sit down and start testing drives today from all the computers we have been breaking down in the past couple months. Here is what I got done today.

On this shelf is 80 sata drives ranging from 40gb to 1tb, 40 DVDRW drives, 100 IDE drives ranging from 40gb to 500gb, about 300 512mb ram sticks, 40 1gb ram sticks and 15 2gb ram sticks.

Here i have 60 IDE drives an 50 or so more DVDRW drives to test yet.
Now I have some more fun to do this week after work and start posting on ebay.
This just goes to show you that there is more value in a computer than just scrap. Ruff Guess right now because i dont want to count every drive and figure it out is about $300 is what I would pay if someone sent me a shipment of just the SATA drives. Who am I kidding BRB going to go do the numbers.

    32 80gb sata drives at $2.50 = $88.00
    3 100gb sata drives at $4.00 = $12.00
    6 160gb sata drives at $4.00 = $24.00
    5 200gb sata drives at $7.00 = $35.00
    16 250gb sata drives at $7.00 = $112.00
    3 320gb sata drives at $7.00 = $21.00
    2 500gb sata drives at $10.00 = $20.00
    1 1000gb sata drive at $10.00 = $10.00

TOTAL = $322.00 for ruffly 85 LBS worth of hard drives. IF thats not better than scrap value I dont know what is. Back to testing I go.

What's the percentage checks good? That looks like a lot of work, all those drives. I have a lot on hand as well waiting to be tested. I have bought a dock station to get started but the pile of material laying in my back yards is calling me for now. I did get my spare ram tested and ready to move.

I have to say my numbers are far smaller than yours but I have profited from your experiences you have shared Thank you, Mike.

I would say im testing in the 90 percent range of good to bad drives. It all comes down to how the computer was handled when tearing it apart though. If you throw the computer into the truck chances are hard drive is not going to like that. Also if you just rip the wires out of it the conectors on the hard drive are not going to like that either. I usualy take care in tearing down my machines so my test rates are usualy pretty good.
Laptop drives are another story. I get maybe 10 to 20 percent good drives on them. They are way more fragile.

Basically its better return to sell good ram than to scrap, right? Also, is there an easy way you guys test ram? I'm not much of a tech guy and if its complicated i might put off doing until i have time to figure it out. If its easy, i have a load i need to go through.

Also I don't mind selling these hard drives but sometime you never know who had these computers and I want to make sure there is no kiddie porn on them If I bought them from the govt or school systems I usually don't worry bout this but if I buy from an individual i always worry

I format test and wipe all the drives. You definitly dont want to sell a drive thats not wiped at least to DOD standards.

Remember just because it does come from school, goverment, or business doesn't mean it kiddie porn free. I'm sure I could pull up numerous links of someone getting busted with kiddie porn on thier computer from a school, gov or business. There is no for sure things in life, and this is one of them.

I'd check and wipe the drive no matter who it came from. Sickos pervade all aspects of society, just because you work for a school or the government doesn't make you immune to this.

Just my two cents worth on this, Your Mileage may vary.

I agree just usually these drives I get are wiped and sanitized before I get them by the school's techs.......These are easy sales for me

It takes a long time to test RAM and a decent amount of time to test hard disks, so profit depends on how much time you spend vs the extra money you make. You are still better off selling on ebay as-is for in demand ram and hds then just scrapping them (depending on how much time boxing and shipping takes you).
