Network Switches

As some of you do pickups or clean outs of businesses. Keep your eyes out for these network switches. Some can be worth a ton of money. Here is one I sold on ebay. Cisco Catalyst WS C2960S 24PS L V02 24 Ports Poe Rack Mountable Stackable Manage 882658337406 | eBay It is so easy to look them up on ebay to see if they are worth more than scrap value. Or feel free to get o hold of me with the model numbers and I will look it up for you. I can now test these units as well and I am considering adding these to my buyers list. Let me know if you all think this is something you would like to see me start buying.

I saw where you did well on a couple of those on EBAY.........Congrats......I actually bought a box of cisco boards and power supplies for $35 at an auction two days ago and sold them for $500 before I left the parking lot......LOL.........Saved me a lot of time and effort and just from my basic knowledge I doubt they were worth much more than that

I've scrapped a lot of switches but they were either old or damaged. If it's a POE switch I would definitely try to sell it.

Some switches are just worthless. But, some have value. Cisco's, Dells, and HPs hold their value well. Some others do, too. Just make sure to wipe the switches and set to factory defaults. You don't want something going out that will pop up with a name of "Clarkson School District Web Server Switch".

I just got several Cisco switches in a school auction and don't know how to test them at all. They probably work, but I won't get nearly as much for them if I have to list "untested".

This is the purpose of this posting. I want to add these to my buy list. I do know how to test them and would gladly test and sell them on ebay for you. Send me a message with the part numbers and I am sure we can work something out.

I don't mean to jack your thread pts, but I was wondering if someone could explain what a network switch is/does in laymans terms. I looked it up on wiki and it's all Greek to me. How is it different from a router?

The main difference from a router and a switch is a router gives out IP addresses and routes all trafic. Switches just connect devices to a network. Now a switch and hub both work the same but a switch does all traffic at same time where as a hub has to share paths and can only do 1 at a time. I hope that helps.

PTS I really wish you lived closer to me in Wisconsin. I get switches,servers,and a ton of misc stuff that is worth way more than scrap value. The problem I have is no one to test the stuff, so most stuff gets put on a pile for later or scrapped. Anyone in Wisconsin that can test the stuff can shoot me a P.M. Thanks for the info,this site is awesome.

I think its a great idea but may end up being more of a local thing........For instance I sent 3 items and they all turned out bad I basically lost money when I could of scrapped them and made a few bucks..........Let us know how it goes!!!!

Yeah thats what I was thinking. people wouldnt want to ship that kind of stuff.

Just picked up a Cisco systems catalyst 5505. I dunno what to do with it, other than of course break it down. My computer guy says it's too old to try to sell.

I agree with your computer guy. Cisco switches and other data switches are a dime a dozen and you're going to have a hard time selling them. My opinion.
Most of our customers have been getting newer POE (Power Over Ethernet) switches because they are purchasing new VOIP phone systems and the new IP phones require the newer switches for power and so V-LANS can be programmed.

They are old by our standards. But if its a full cabinet and none of the cards are missing it still has some resale value. However with that being said the scrap value on them are very good as well.

I agree POE is where the modern market is going but alot of the older non POE switches still have some value to over seas markets and people needed a switch for one that died in an all ready built network that wants a cheaper fix than a $1000 switch.
