Large Battery Reuse - 40 cents per pound+

Awhile ago I was asked to bid on a lot of telecommunication scrap. Good stuff. Lots of copper, brass, aluminum and heavy gold plate on some parts. BUT it also included some very large exide style clear plastic case batteries. They were 2 volts each and each one weighed close to 200 pounds. Battery prices were so low at the time, I bid 1/4 cent per pound hoping I wouldn't get them. Well, I did anyway.

Turns out the batteries were one of the most profitable items in the lot. People loved them for alternative off grid home power systems. I traded sets of 6 (to make 12 volts) for all sorts of needed items like a large flat bed truck for one.

I sold many hundreds of sets to individuals and then finally to a dealer in alternative energy. I sold a set of 6 for $500. That works out to around 40 cents per pound.

So, I always look at reuse value first before I scrap anything.
