    SS conduit pipe

so a while ago i ran into a bunch of unidentified SS pipe,
    qty: 135 pieces
    length: 5ft
    dia: 1in

so I took a sample over to a used construction supply store and the guy (owner?) working there told me that it was conduit pipe which is supposed to come in 10ft lengths and becuase it was cut into 5ft lengths, it is now useless and i should just scrap it

on the other hand when i said "well its SS so i should at least get a decent buck for that, right" he was like "nope, just regular steel" and then when i had him put a magnet up to it, he was like "oh, guess your right" which reinforced my thoughts that he doesnt know what hes talking about when he says the pipe is useless

    what do you guys think?
    collecting san joses scrap

Cut one in half and keep in your trunk(or on the floor in your back seat area) and scrap the rest.

Most likely 304 SS. You might get 70 cents or less for it. Make sure that the yard you take it to has a metal identification gun so you don't get screwed. The price between 304 and 316 can be 20 to 30 cents a pound so you want to make sure its absolutely what they are paying you for.

Just a note ; One time I bought some scrap that i figured was some kind of aluminun the customer did not know exactley what is was and niether did I so to be safe I bought as irony aluminum. these pipes were 5 inches in dia. and 3 ft. length and were really heavy. I'd never seen anything like it before. Much to my surprise at the yard the guy says oh yeah this is some hi-grade s. s. pipe for the food industy, that was when the market was high I had some 200 lbs of it.
Yeah it was a good paycheck that day. wb.

Nah he's pretty much right about the pipe being useless because i did electrical work for about 6 years of my life and conduit comes in 10 ft pieces and once you cut it no one really wants to buy it because when electricians run conduit in buildings they put up 10ft sticks for long runs you know what i mean? and the only time they cut it is for bends and very short distances, but its always sold in 10ft sections.
