    Questions about Wire guages

First of all, is copper #1 anywhere from size 16 up to 0? Iv heard that but just want to confirm it so i my seperation of wires can be made easier.
And my next question is, say i have a size 12 wire made up of stranded wire..does that still count as a 12 gauge #1 copper wire or no?

Up here in northern Indiana at our little scrapyard, the 12 ga. would be considered #1 if it was cleaned of it's insulation. I still strip out CB coaxes and it all goes for clean #1 also. Mike

#1 Copper - stripped wire strands there are bigger than a number two pencil lead.
#2 Copper - does not meet criteria for #1 Copper. Is free of any alloy such as soldering.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.
