    Wal mart buyback program

When my dad and I went down to Florida for go-kart racing in the Daytona area, the local Wal-Mart had a buy back program for glass bottles and aluminum cans. But my local Wal-Mart, which is 1200 miles away does not have a buy back program. I guess im just slightly confused on this...

I was thinking it'd be nice to actually be able to collect glass cans to junk out. Any of your thoughts on this?

Certain states charge deposits on containers. You get your deposit back when you return it to the store. Usually the stores that buy them back only offer store credit. So its not like your going to make money doing it.

Unfortunely it is illegal to do that.

Figured as much. Anyway i think its a great idea and all states should do it. It keeps alot of recycles out of landfills. And helps us scrappers out.

but the deposit states have an added deposit fee passed along to the consumer.. meaning each bottle of soda costs an extra $0.05. thats the incentive to bring them back

It's like you loan the state money and then up to you to get it back, not a good deal at all!

there was a guy a few years ago that took a load of cans to , I think Wisconsen, from another state he was charged with fraud and did a substancial tine in jail and paid a huge fine. that may have changed by now, I don't know. I do know those states that have this incentive are noticably cleaner, at least along the highways.

you can tell a state that has draconion title laws on scrap cars by counting the junkers sitting in the front or back yards.

Here's a news article about a big scam that Michigan exposed a few years ago. Over $500,000 in cash seized so we weren't taking about peanuts .

When I lived in Massachusetts they had a bottle bill there. I was a chambermaid in a resort town and would collect cans and bottles all summer from the rooms and then cash them in the winter when things were thin.

When I was a kid we had a .02 deposet on pop bottles. You could pay the .02 or bring in a bottle to cover the depost. I would go around and collect bottles all day, always had money in my pockets, mom and dad loved it becuase I wouldn't bug them for money every day. I think thats were I got the scraping bug.

New Hampshire bottles and cans have No Deposit on them , but they are all marked with the different state deposits , plus there is No sales tax and State Run liquor Stores.
Mass. has a $.05 deposit on bottles and cans
Maine has $ .05 on soda bottles and can's , also on water bottles and fruit juice containers and $.15 on wine and liquor bottles .

I just flagged that video as a 'scam/fraud' with youtube. Crap like that really irks me.
I lived in a town that bordered a 'no deposit' province. This was before there were markings on the cans/bottles to detect. The recycle place had to limit the number of containers you could bring back per day/week, and started taking names and phone numbers for you get your money!

I literally live 1/4 mile south of the Michigan state line in Indiana. Michigan's buyback for cans and bottles is 10 cents (highest in the nation). Almost every pop can I buy has the markings on top of the can showing the "MI 10cent" mark, even though I usually do my shopping in Indiana (IN has no buy back program). I have never attempted to redeem cans up in Michigan, but I'm curious to know how they would be able to prove I bought the cans in Indiana and not Michigan? Is there some other marking on the cans other than the on top of the can???

In answer to my own post above, apparently there is continued legislation in Michigan requiring Coca-Cola and Miller and Bud and anyone who produces large quantities of beverages for consumption in Michigan has to have some separate and distinct “symbol or mark or other distinguishing characteristic” on the Michigan containers which aren’t on the non-Michigan containers. Obviously, this has angered just about all the major beverage companies, and the beverage manufacturers have challenged the law in federal court claiming that it is unconstitutional because it is extraterritorial and discriminatory in violation of the dormant commerce clause. A district court disagreed and found in favor of the state. A petition to the Supreme Court is inevitable. For now, the application of the law is stayed pending further review. But if the law is upheld, somehow, anyone falling into its scheme will be forced to set up a production line for the unique-mark containers.

FYI...Michigan enacted a law criminalizing the return of containers by anyone who knows that no deposit was paid in the state of Michigan on the container. The penalty is incremental, but the minimum is up to 93 days in prison or a fine of not more than $1,000. (minimum 100 containers returned).
