I just noticed our local yard in Warsaw (Lewis Salvage) is now buying cardboard. The website says that loose is $30. net ton and baled is $40. net ton. That baled price is the same as the metal appliance price.

If you enjoy your freedom, thank a vet.
If you have the means to bale it, you can usually get around 80.00 per ton, but might have to sit until you have a larger quantity.
Yea, this is a smaller feeder yard so that is their markup.
I suppose if you had a good way to transport a few tons at a time it would be feasible, but one ton of loose cardboard has to take up a LOT of room.
Yeah, cardboard pays better than shred/sheet iron around here. At my place, we pay $25/NT for shred and $25/NT for baled cardboard. However, we don't pay for loose because our local mills only pay for baled. But...I have a baler, so I can bale the loose and come out ahead.
Believe it or not, we have actually started paying for shred in this down market. Because of our volumes, we get a decent price for shred. We have a large drop off that will hold 6 to 7 ton of shred at a time. Since I started buying shred from my smaller e-waste providers, my volumes have gone up all around. We are becoming their one stop drop off. Believe it or not, at $25 NT, we are the best paying yard for 30 miles in any direction. We only take small stuff like computer cases, etc. I've take a couple of stoves as well....but it all goes out of their car, onto my scale, and straight in to my roll off. While I may not be making a large income on the steal, I'm providing a service to my customers. Oh, and I'm putting up a sign that says "Cardboard Recycled Here. Free Drop Off." Our cardboard has increased as well.
So, find a buyer for your cardboard, even if it is a small amount, and offer a service. I'm convinced that when the markets start going up again, I'll have a customer base already established.
Ken
We bale out about 2 bales a week of cardboard. I hate the stuff but it is a byproduct of what we do. We also have customers drop it off with their Escrap and steel.
My guys call it crapboard around here.
might end up being the "pay the bills" thing for at least awhile...until the steel prices rise again. It is READILY available and if you have a higher end baler, you can get 800lb bales out of it. They stack easily, so you can put alot into a small space. Heck, I would almost rather do that along with paper if I had a space large enough.
GRANTED, I do EWASTE (FAR FAR MORE PROFITABLE THAN most metals for the space)....I would just do the other to pay the bills if I had the space.
PROFIT is made when you BUY/ACQUIRE NOT when you sell
Its a break even product for us. and we are kicking out 1200lbs bales.
I will stick with my plastic and escrap.
MAN I wish we could do plastic here too...I would do it as well...BUT higher grade paper is worth quite a bit more than cardboard. You might want to check those prices as well. Team up with the schools to recycle it (or anywhere else that generates a large amount of paper)...magazines, "white" paper especially...
Just another avenue for $$$ to weather the commodity metals market.
