if u had to convert that price to South African Rands. then it would be just under R20 per kg.

    and thats cheap.
if u had a few tons to sell at that price, then it would all get sold out in no time at all ,here.

Where is this at? They are only paying $.50 a lb here in Cleburne, south of Fort Worth.

Unfortunately, pecans won't grow up here. About the only nuts we have are black walnuts. But its cool to be in the South and see hardware stores selling whole pecans. My wife had a source of fresh Texas pecans for a while. Way different than the big grocery store offerings...

In a similar vein, I saw a buyer in VT looking for acorns and hickory nuts, offering $.25/#. I have heard that there are a couple of foragers in my region who find acorns and black walnuts from up country and drive them to NYC to sell for well over a buck per pound.

Yes, acorns are edible. You just have to know how to prepare them. I tried to make a batch of acorns a few years ago, but gave up while trying to de-shell those things. PITA

    Pecans

The hickory nuts and acorns were designated as pig feed. Forage-fattened pork is a big deal.

I've had acorn bread. It was really good but the people who made it stated that life was too short to spend it smashing acorns by hand all day.

Local growers here are charging close to 6 bucks a pound. That's quite a profit for whomever is buying at 65 cents. People who have trees in their yards are getting more around here. My grand parents old house in the old part of Mesa has two pecan trees. Both papershell. You can peel them with you hands. Great for pies. The people living there now just waste them. Sad.
