glass from tv's

bjybjy If theres a full vacuum in the tube, then the volume of air getting sucked in is the volume of the TV tube.

I think the one that exploded on the lawn was because the glass was in the sun, as theres two sorts of glass, they expand at different rates. If one expands faster, then its gonna break at the join, then BOOM!

Car windows are tempered by heating them up to red hot then sudden cooling with cold air.
That cools the outer layer faster than the inside & from there on theres huge stresses set up in the glass, when that stress is compromised the whole thing breaks up.
Its **** interesting to see, both the process of making the safety glass & then later, when it breaks up into tiny peices.

Actually the stresses are similar, a compression from the outside of the glass & a 'vacuum' from inside.

Theres no way you want to be within 8 feet of a exploding TV screen, that kids nearly cr@pp3d himself, just like I nearly did the first time it happened to me.
Its a real loud BOOM.

You either boil or you freeze. No medium in a vacuum. If there are other atoms there, then it's not a vacuum and there will be more range of temperature.

Thats why i love my yard and now its .13 per pd but believe it or not ive never taken not one tv there because i focus solely on junk vehicles, i guess i just enjoy being handed 250-600 in cash lol.

Plus, if you stock pile I'm sure it'd be pretty easy to get a couple hundred with a full truck/trailer load.

I had a 32' tube tv explode on me about a month ago. Completely forgot to release the vacuum before cutting the band off and somehow I made it out with just a few cuts, nothing major. Took me about 3 hours to clean most of it up. But I still find glass chunks in odd spots in my 30x50 shop.

Won't forget that again.

Atmospheric pressure at sea level is 14.696 per square inch, usually rounded off to 14.7 psi.

Hi to all you crt guys that love to explode the glass, I have been doing a little crt recycling for a few months now and a little research on it through utube and found the best way to release the vacuum was to take a little nail, about a 10 penny or so, and pop a little hole in the area where the suction cup attaches. It is soft material and the nail goes right in, pull it out and the vacuum is equalized. then do what ever else you need to. I've aready got about 2k in glass and have been looking for a way to maximumize the return, I'm going to have to put together one of those cutters that I read about, the one with the DC power source, thanks for that idea.

who you selling the glass to?

Haven't had any luck in that department. just been collecting it up and looking for a buyer. I have been read all around here at SMF for a possible buyer and I know that if I could make it cutlet, then I would have an easier time locating a buyer, but again, most want 10k for minimums.

That idea was posted here about a year ago, that's why we recommend the newer people do quite a bit of reading.

Yeah and I do know that once you open the glass up, you need to be able to contain the phosphor in a clean air vacuum container, something a little better than just a shopvac type filtering system. I have looked into the proper equipment and looking at about 100k in cost, not to many suppliers for that type of equipment out there, either Japan or Germany.

Anyone around who knows the method computerscrapper used to build his own crt cutter? He hasn't been around for almost two years and I'm interested in attempting to make one.
