TV Carcases

I just spoke with a couple managers at different Goodwill locations. Not all Goodwill locations take broken Monitors and TVs. Stores in different regions are run out of different offices.

I am on the boarder of two regions. One takes them and the other doesn't. The one that takes them said no problem to dropping off larger loads. When I told him that I would be bringing them in 20-30 at a time, he said just to call ahead and make sure there was enough staff to unload them. They also asked that you specify if it is working or non-working so they don't have to test them and can sort them into the right area.

Check with your location and see if they are the same, but this is a great resource for those of us without access to a local processor that buys them or for those without the storage space for a lot of CRT glass.

Yikes are we talking televisions still or just TV's in general?

With massive legislation coming into the market at remarkable speeds, you may want to consider the cost of certifications which will be REQUIRED (i would be shocked if it doesnt hit by 2013) when dealing with CRT based equipment. The cost of the audit for R2 (EPA backed) is Over $6,000 (assuming you pass round 1 and round 2 with flying colors) not to mention the cost of implementation, lets call it $4,000 since I like even numbers.You are looking at absorbing $10,000 of cost to be in a business where the volumes are on a steep decline.

The big boys in the business are lobbying to eliminate ALL exports of electronic scrap material. This will significantly devalue the low grade (which is already low), yokes and more.

That sounds fantastic. Wish the big guys in the game would leave the little guys alone. We have respect for a well run business (like SOME of the big guys), why dont they have respect for ours?

Spot on Hoss... the biggest guys in the industry are meeting behind closed doors to corner the market. This industry may not exist in the next 3-5 years on a small scale... Dell, HP, IBM, Apple all want a piece of the pie now.

Just got back from checking with the Goodwill asst manager here. They'll take both computer monitors and tv tubes. I specifically showed her on a tv in the store what I'd be bringing in. "Broken" means the front glass (screen) is broken. The yoke in back being broken or missing does not count as broken and can be brought in without being boxed and labeled.

Bottom line is check with your area store as it seems each manager is interpreting their policy differently. Eventually, they'll probably all get on the same page.

I just know this saves me $5 a monitor/tube which is what the landfill said they'd charge.

Took four stripped TV tubes and one computer monitor over this morning. Got a bonus I wasn't counting on - Donation receipt for four TVs.

Most Goodwills or any thrift store around here, give you a donation receipt. Only reason most people ever donate items.

DO you know of an ABS buyer in the denver area? I have yet to find one that pays for it.

Up here in Ontario, the government has recently implemented a recycling program for e-waste, paints, etc. It's funded by eco fees (taxes) levied on new products. Simply go to a retailer or other business that is signed on and drop off your stuff - no charge. This web site: http://recycleyourelectronics.ca/Ele...s/Default.aspx tells you where to go. The various drop-off locations have restrictions on what they will/can take as well as quantities. I tried this out today with a TV and a monitor carcass that I had stripped. I was in and out in 30 seconds. Looks like this is going to be a nice little sideline for me. Thanks to the forum for giving me the idea.

I probably shouldn't admit this...but...plastic for me goes to my local dump site. I don't have the room to save up enough plastic to make it worthwhile for selling, or even giving away to a refiner. In my city (small city) we have a strict garbage rule: if it doesn't fit in the city-issued garbage can, it either needs to be kept until one of the two "bulk" days they have a year, or hauled to the local dump site, which is 3 bays made up of huge concrete blocks, two for "garbage" and one for "metal", with a smaller aea for "tagged" freon items. Obviously, the "metal" area is always empty, between the 15 or so people who check it on a daily basis, but theres also pleanty of people who scavage through the garbage areas, of course i'm one of them. I brought a car load of plastic casings there one day, went back 3 hours later with more and 99% of what i dropped off earlier was gone...so somebody picks it up....bonus for them. The city also cleans it out every morning, and there is no fee to dump, as long as it's not on their "prohibited" list.

Tubes...tubes get thrown in the dumpster by my parents apartment. I know, I know, shame on me...

I called my local best buy to inquire about this. She said, that they will take all forms of electronics for FREE. They used to charge, but not anymore.

She also stated too, that for PCs, if you leave the hard drives in, there is a $15 service fee for it, because they punch holes in them (however, we all know, that they wouldnt get any from us lol).

I am affiliated with several non-profits, both for personal reasons and for scrapping. Salvation Army and some others actually use the proceeds for charitable purposes. Goodwill's goal is profit for administrative salaries. They "provide jobs" - for workers to sort and sell the free stuff for administration to benefit. There is no charitable function in their business plan. May want to keep that in mind when considering future donations.

The thing you need to realize erewen, true many non-profit higher ups command large salaries, not any Joe Blow can orchestrate the many logistics involved to keep these programs running. Just the shear volume of stuff that get's dropped off (much of it junk) and processed by a staff of folks that are challenged in many regards, amazes me.
