Having researched and worked with used tires for 20 years ( I own an earthship and have built 11) there are some serious inaccuracies in the rubberecycle ad. Used tires are mostly inert due to vulcanization and 99.9% of the outgassing happens in the first 6 months (less if exposed to sunshine), this according to a 1.5 million dollar study at Montrose Geo-tech 1991. Shredding the tire into mulch increases the toxicity and is not recommended for mulch etc. Tires are a federally mandated fuel source for coal plants and cement plants (an excellent way to recover the steel) and barring reuse this is the best way to recycle them at the end of their wear cycle. Indecently an OCED study concluded that car scrapping schemes have a net increase in carbon footprint since most carbon emissions happen in the construction of the car..not tail pipe emissions. In fact the mileage had little to do with carbon footprint (average car must go 2.5 million miles to exceed construction footprint). Cash clunkers is really about spurring consumer consumption, it much greener to use a car as long as safely possible since that carbon debt is already paid.

Yeah i just found a place locally and he shreds and seperates the tires.He charges $1.00 if u bring them to him.I have about 40 to take down there not all that bad i dont guess.To bad someone couldn't buy them and recycle them like they do metal.

I also sale all of my good tires to the used tire shop $5.00 a piece and i just put that money with my saving money because that is just bonus money to me.

It's the law of supply and demand. There's just too many used tires, and they need to be disposed of somehow. That's why people can charge you for taking them off your hands, as opposed to buying them. Think about it--It's good for fertilizer, but good luck getting the Sewer Authority to pay you every time you flush...

I have seen inquires from overseas Chinese/Indian buyers paying between $1-$4 a piece for used tires, delivered to their locations. I suspect that some people who have the capacity to export container loads of used tires are making substantial money.

Its an old thread but thought i'd throw this out there,

Some tires are retread able, i know especially on semi's, people will buy old used tires for like 5 bucks a tire, then retread them and sell them. I worked on big trucks with my dad, and there was a guy that would buy them if they were the retread able kind. Dont have to have any tread as long as the side wall isn't messed up

Pics? I love earthships.. ive scanned probably all the ones on google images several times.

My dad owns his own shop and fixes forklifts and other large industrial trucks, and we get old tires all the time. I remember once that we were saving them for a guy that shredded them up and some how converted the shredded rubber into diesel fuel.
