family project

I just started scrapping as a way to show my 5 year old how to recyle more then just plastic and cans. Now I am having fun with it and have talked my wife into a project of making our faimly recyle everything possible over one year. I want to track the amount of waste we keep out of the landfills and the money made on the project. So I need to spend some time researching and google has not been that help full, maybe some of you all might be able to enlighten me on a few things.

1. what does it take to sell used cardboard, glass bottles, and plastics, in the Dallas area other then a lot of it.
2. would this be something people would want to see on youtube
3. what all in the house can be recylced

Welcome dtrade83, Look in local phone book for nearest recycler and check pricing and what they accept. Tin cans, electronics, actually any thing can be recycled weather you get money for it or not is another thing. wb

Thats how ya do it! On my records I kept, 13,740 lbs of just scrap Iron out of the landfills in 2011. I dont do cardboard, paper, plastic. The closest place that takes plastic is over 40 miles away. My place of employment recycles all that so if I have to much for the recycling tote on garbage days i bring it there. Keep waxed c-board sepertate from regular c-board.

I saved all our paper for the month opf Jan it came to 37 lbs
16 lbs newspaper
12 lbs paperboard
4 lbs office / mixed paper
5 lbs cardboard

Place by me pays .01 a pound for it. So not worth doing. But it goes to the city in there bins to be recycled

Was doing glass btls / jars and getting .05 a pound for them 28 lbs a month. They stopped taking them so they also go to the city to recycle

Still doing #1 plastic bottles for .30 a pound 4 pounds a month so have to stockpile them

Starting to do #2 plastic for .05 a pound and will need to stockpile this as well as it takes alot to make a pound

Alum cans 11 lbs month @ .62 lb is $6.82

Iron steel 1805 lb a month @ .10 is $180.45

Other metals 259 lb month @ .53 a lb avg is $137.11

It pays to recycle

The city also takes ABP plastic and will soon take #3, #4, #5 & #7 plastic. I know I have quite a few pounds of plastic each month...

Interesting concept...I actually read an article a few years back about a family that did the same thing. At the end of the year they only had something like 5 pounds of refuse. From what I remember it was mainly rechargeable batteries that were no longer good.
